Talk about Goa and think of beaches, parties, happening nightlife, and colorful markets. “What’s the point of visiting a place with the same things as our city”? I cribbed every time we planned a trip to Goa, so it never happened. But this time it was different and we made it to the island state (read UT). We looked beyond the usual and agreed to explore the lesser-known places here. Here is a list of 8 offbeat things to do in Goa.
1. Pay Homage at Less Explored Ancient Temples

Goa is often associated with churches. On the other hand, there are several temples with a rich heritage and ancient history, sadly forgotten and less spoken about. Portuguese invaders had destroyed temples to build churches and their own establishments. Consequently, the locals shifted the idols and rebuilt temples from scratch in the interiors of Goa, away from the reach of the Portuguese. Hence most of these temples are located in remote villages or islands. The stunning architecture and carvings of the temples left us speechless.
- Shri Shantadurga Temple (Ponda): Dedicated to the goddess Shantadurga, this temple is a fine example of Indo-Portuguese architecture.
- Shri Kamakshi Temple (Shiroda): Nestled amidst scenic surroundings, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Take a ferry to reach this temple in South Goa.
- Mahalasa Narayani Temple (Mardol): Known for its intricate carvings and rich mythology.

2. The Lesser-Known Churches of Goa

The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral attract hoves of tourists daily. After-all these are prestigious UNESCO world heritage sites. Naturally, these places are never vacant. However among the offbeat things to do in Goa, the lesser-known churches top our list.
- St. Anne’s Church (Talaulim): A 17th-century marvel known for its unique Indian Baroque architecture and serene surroundings. You would immediately recognize the church in various film shoots. 6 km from Madgaon, this ancient church is a gem of South Goa.
- Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount (Old Goa): Dedicated to Virgin Mary, this is among the oldest churches of Goa. Perched atop a hill, this quaint chapel offers breathtaking views of Old Goa and the Mandovi River. So if you happen to be in South Goa or around Madgaon, consider this offbeat place in Goa.
- St. Francis of Assisi: Around 500 meters from Basilicia Bom Jesus, lies the St Francis of Assisi, built in 1665. Opposite the ruins of St. Augustine Tower, this church displays a unique architectural style and octagonal towers. We had the whole place to ourselves and we enjoyed the calming vibes.
3. Explore Fontainhas- The Colorful Portuguese Quarters

Step into a time capsule as you traverse the narrow lanes of Fontainhas in Panjim (North Goa). Also known as Goa’s Latin Quarter, this UNESCO-listed heritage boasts the most vibrant houses which were once the residence of the Portuguese. Fontainhas is an amalgam of arching balconies, French windows, facades with quirky murals, quaint cafes, and stunning art galleries. Though the place gets crowded during peak season, we found no crowd in February. Fontainhas is like an open art gallery where you soak in the calming vibes and a rich Goan history.

We highly recommend exploring Fontainhas if you are looking for offbeat things to do in Goa, beyond the usual touristy ones. Visit in the morning for less crowds and in the evening for better views.
4. Take a Ferry to Divar Island – A Slice of Old Goa

Escape the bustling beaches and take a ferry ride to Divar Island, a quaint haven untouched by commercial tourism. Located on the Mandovi River, this island is a treasure trove of heritage homes, old churches, and rustic charm. The beautiful houses, peaceful ambiance, and lush greenery swept us off our feet. Furthermore, we recommend visiting the old churches and temple relics that stand out with beautiful, natural backdrops.
How to reach Divar Island: Board a ferry from Old Goa or Ribandar which will drop you to the island. Also, you can take your vehicle with you on the ferry at no extra cost.
5. Catch Sunset from Offbeat Viewpoints

Goa is known for stunning sunsets. However, ditch the crowded beaches and head to these offbeat viewpoints for a relaxing experience.
- Chapor Fort: Enjoy panoramic views of the Chapora River and Vagator Beach as the sun sets behind the Arabian Sea. Additionally, Vagator Beach is less crowded than its popular counter Anjuna Beach, barely ten minutes away. The limestone rocks give the beach many unique viewpoints to catch stunning sunsets.
- Betul Lighthouse: Located in South Goa, this quiet spot offers a breathtaking view of the confluence of the Sal River and the sea.
- Cabo De Rama Fort: Perched atop a cliff, this fort is perfect for witnessing a mesmerizing sunset with minimal crowds.
- Ries Magos Fort: This is an ancient Portuguese fort built in 1551 on the banks of the Mandovi River. With dated canons, stone stairs, and impressive walls, the fort offers a magnificent view of the Arabian Sea, especially during sunsets.
6. Wander Through Spice Plantations – The most offbeat thing to do in Goa
For a sensory escape, take a guided tour of Goa’s aromatic spice plantations. Not only these plantations offer insights into the cultivation of spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and vanilla but a wholesome trip into nature.
