Filmmaker Keith Gomes’ Badass Ravi Kumar, which stars Himesh Reshammiya in the lead, has been making waves because of its unthinkably funny and rhyming dialogues. The person responsible for those quote-worthy lines is Bunty Rathore, who also wrote similar dialogues in the first film of the franchise, The Xpose (2014). In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rathore spoke about the process of writing such hatke lines and other interesting bits.

Rathore said that Himesh Reshammiya wanted the lines to suit the yesteryear era of Hindi cinema. “He wanted the lines to suit the 1980s,” said Rathore. “That is also our tagline. Actually 99% of the films today don’t even get noticed. Leave alone being hit or flop, the first thing is to, at least, get noticed. Himesh bhai had said that we need to do something different. We already had The Xpose, which was set in the 1970s.”

Rathore added, “He (Reshammiya) told me that he wants the film to be full on in the zone of Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. That’s why we have names of characters like Jagadhar Chaudhary and Mahaveer Ahuja. When we started working on the film, Animal and Pushpa didn’t even exist. He wanted every scene to have action and dialogue baazi. He felt we haven’t seen such dialogue baazi since long. And nobody had made me write such dialogues before, whereas I have a lot of such maal as I have grown up watching Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Mithun’s (Chakaborty) films.”

When asked how he came across such crazily rhyming lines, Rathore went deep in thought and said, “Sometimes while writing one line, I get another line,” he said. “So, I keep it archived. Woh likhte likhte ho jata hai. It’s all about practice. For example, I had this line ‘Janam kundli mein Shani, aur Ravi Kumar se dushmani’. But I wasn’t getting anything to put in between. I was telling my wife Monika Rathore that if I get another line, the dialogue will get complete. Then, she just told me that we shouldn’t have honey with ghee, else it will affect our health. So, I got, ‘Ghee ke saath honey’. The dialogue instantly matched.”

The most famous dialogue from the film, which was also a part of The Xpose, goes like – ‘Tere shareer mein itna khoon nahin hoga jitna Ravi Kumar ek baar mein moot deta hai’. Rathore was, obviously, asked about this one.

He said, “You can’t dissect such line. As in, how much water will there be in his bladder? (laughs). But our films work due to the flow, not because of logic. We are making a movie, not a documentary. I think commercially. So, as per the commerciality, there is a direct comparison ki tera blood mere susu ke barabar hai bhai. This is where you get seetis and taalis, like he is comparing the other person’s blood with his susu. This dialogue is to humiliate the other person. A good comparison happens when your punch gets visualized.”

Often in comedy films, actors prefer to improvise on the sets. But as per Rathore, very little of that happened in Badass Ravi Kumar. “Himesh bhai has a quality that once a line is fixed, he doesn’t change it,” he said. “He is so kamaal that he remembers the entire script, including the other person’s dialogues. He is a great personality. I am very impressed with his farsightedness and analysis. He knew what he was doing from day one. He is self-aware. He does what he says. He doesn’t change anything, be it his commitment or whether it’s related to monetary factors or the script of the film.”

The rhyming lines of Badass Ravi Kumar are making people recall Kanti Shah’s Gunda, another film known for the same reason. Rathore doesn’t believe their film is entirely comparable to Gunda.

“You didn’t refer to any other film, you only referred to Gunda with Badass (Ravi Kumar),” he said. “The kind of limelight I have received for this film, I haven’t received for any other film in my career. And people are not judging me for this film. Instead, they say, ‘Tu aisa bhi likh sakta hai, humein pata hi nahin tha’. So, Himesh bhai actually opened another portal for me. We keep saying that Gunda was a C grade film. So, you can compare both the films due to their rhyming dialogues but not in terms of filming.”

Currently, there is a debate going on in the country about whether comedy should have double meaning or sexual jokes. Rathore said that he always prefers writing clean comedy. “I am a part of Indra Kumar’s Dhamaal series, but I am not a part of his Grand Masti because I don’t like double meaning comedy. So, in Badass (Ravi Kumar), you won’t find any dialogue that my wife or daughter would find uncomfortable,” he said.

Badass Ravi Kumar ends by hinting a sequel. When prodded about the next film in the franchise, Bunty Rathore jokingly said, “Till I get the signing amount for that film, I won’t be able to tell you whether it’s being made or not. Jokes apart, but abhi aisa kuchh socha toh nahin hai. They just included that in the end so that Keyur will one day call you and ask this question (laughs).”
