Arjun Kapoor: I was told

I was told ‘Teri action picture ka career khatam…’ [Mere Husband Ki Biwi Exclusive]

Arjun Kapoor returns to a lover boy avatar in Mere Husband Ki Biwi. The film, directed by Mudassar Aziz, hits theatres on February 21 and also stars Bhumi Pednekar, Rakul Preet Singh and stand up comic Harsh Gujral in key roles. Arjun Kapoor, who was last seen in Singham Again as Danger Lanka, a role he won tremendous appreciation for, is excited to return to the romantic genre. Talking to us on the latest episode of Spotlight With Smrity, Arjun Kapoor admitted that he feels he has taken too long to return to a genre that he loves. Recalling Two States, one of the films that stands out in his filmography, Arjun revealed, “People around me told me that doing Two States is too risky. In fact, after Ishaqzaade released, I had people telling me ‘You should do these rustic and rugged roles. Tu rom-com wala Hero nahin ban sakta.” Also Read – Kaun Banega Crorepati 16: Amitabh Bachchan opens up about Shweta Bachchan’s biggest fear, says ‘Usko toh baandh ke rakhna padta…’

Arjun Kapoor was also told that he is not the boy next door, something that he strongly disagrees with. “I am not a chocolate boy but I am the boy next door. I feel I have an aspirational quality, since I may not be the quintessential romantic looking actor. It creates a little more relatability,” he shared. Arjun also recalled another gem of a movie in his career, Ki and Ka with Kareena Kapoor Khan, where he played a house husband. “People told me ‘Tu heels mein naachega, tera action film ka career khatam hai. And the actress is married, older than you and you are playing a house husband.” Arjun is glad that he took that chance. “It paid off. Apart from Two States and Ki and Ka, Arjun was also part of rom-com Mubarakan, where he played a double role. And he is proud of being part of all these films as he feels this helps him connect with the family audience. “This gives you longevity as you connect with the younger audience a well and they grow up and watch you in films,” he expressed.

The actor has grown up watching love stories and rom-coms and an AD on Salam-E-Ishq. “I loved watching Love Actually, I enjoy films like My Best Friend’s Wedding and I am a Hugh Grant fan,” Arjun revealed highlighting his love for the genre, and further shared, “Two States was my biggest success. Danger Lanka belonged to others as well since the film had an ensemble cast. But Two States, I was starting out and it was the first Rs 100 crore film from my generation. So I am really happy going back to the genre.”

His director, Mudassar Aziz, who has directed him Mere Husband Ki Biwi agrees with Arjun. “He has a knack for these kind of roles and with films like Two States with Alia Bhatt, Ki and Ka and Mubarakan, the audience has expressed their acceptance towards Arjun in these characters,” said the filmmaker, further admiring the actor’s work in R Balki’s Ki and Ka, “Ki and Ka was more difficult to pull off than Mere Husband Ki Biwi, where he goes from being a lover boy to bichaara. Because there he was pushing the envelope.”

There is a moment in the Mere Husband Ki Biwi trailer where Arjun Kapoor is introduced with ‘Launde ne mehnat ki hai’. And that is clearly visible in his movies in the recent years. And now, as he gets back to a genre that he loves, excels in and is accepted by the audience, it is safe to say that Mere Husband Ki Biwi will be an entertaining watch for not just Arjun Kapoor fans but film enthusiasts overall. The film releases in theatres on February 21, 2025. The film has Arjun playing a husband torn between his past wife Bhumi Pednekar and future wife Rakul Preet Singh. The film marks the acting debut of stand up comic Harsh Gujral, in the role of Arjun’s best friend.
