What is Mere Husband Ki Biwi all about?
Ankur Chaddha (Arjun Kapoor) lives in Delhi and works with his father (Shakti Kapoor). A deal for their real estate broking business takes him to Rishikesh where he bumps into Antara Khanna (Rakul Preet Singh), the ‘it’ girl from college who always set his heart aflutter. Now, that he is single, his best friend Rehaan Qureshi (Harsh Gujral) eggs him on to try his luck. He finally gets a closure on his past relationship and failed marriage and moves ahead in his relationship with Antara. But… as luck would have it, his past wife Prabhleen Dhillon (Bhumi Pednekar) re-enters his life, creating a chaos that no one could have prepared him for and no one can save him from. What’s Hot?
There have been a lot of movies in the past where two women are vying for attention from one man. Judaai, Gharwali Baharwali (Anil Kapoor), Sajan Chale Sasural (Govinda), Biwi No. 1 (Salman Khan) and many more. However, what sets Mere Husband Ki Biwi apart is the story. Just when you know that it is getting predictable, it will throw a surprise at you. The way the characters are written will make it difficult to pick a favourite and take a side. At different moments, you will find yourself rooting for each of these, and at others, you will also find reasons to wish for their failure. Mere Husband Ki Biwi once again gives Bhumi Pednekar an opportunity to prove what a powerhouse performer she is. There is never a dull moment when she is onscreen. Director Mudassar Aziz has directed her earlier in Pati Patni Aur Woh and he is already experienced in getting the best out of her and that’s what he does.

Arjun Kapoor goes from Danger Lanka (his last big screen character in Singham Again) to the lover boy Ankur Chaddha in Mere Husban Ki Biwi and his seamless transition proves his range as an actor. After his much-loved and appreciated characters in Two States (with Alia Bhatt), Ki and Ka (with Kareena Kapoor Khan), and Mubarakan (with Athiya Shetty and Ileana D’Cruz), Arjun once again shines in this boy next door avatar. I have always found him extremely endearing in these characters and I strongly believe it is the reason he unfailingly strikes a chord each time he stars in the genre. His Ankur is relatable and a much-needed break from the over-the-top heroic archetypes that have become a regular on the big screens since some time now.

There is a particular scene in the film, right after Ankur and Prabhleen’s (Arjun and Bhumi) marriage ends, where Arjun excels. There is no dialogue, no other co-star, but Arjun owns the screen and the scene. Kudos to Mudassar Aziz for seeing in AK what others may have missed. The trailer introduced Arjun with ‘launde ne mehnat ki hai’ and it stands absolutely true. Hope Arjun is able to strike a balance and play characters like these apart from action and intense roles. Both Arjun and Bhumi share a great chemistry – as a couple deeply and madly in love and also as a couple who have freshly fallen out of love with each other.

Rakul Preet Singh looks gorgeous in every frame and plays her role of a physiotherapist effortlessly. Her scenes with Bhumi are delightful and both the ladies complement each other with their flawless performances as they play characters constantly indulged in one-up-womanship.

Harsh Gujral was a surprise package. While he looked a little awkward in the first few minutes of the film, he was soon at home with his character, delivering his lines with confidence and seemed like a natural. His retorts to everything that his best friend Ankur (Arjun) says or does were entertaining. His bromance with Arjun is pleasant.

The other actors are cast well for their characters. It is wonderful to see Shakti Kapoor (not indulging in cringe comedy), Kanwaljit Singh and Anita Raj on the big screen. Dino Morea looks dishy in his small but important role. Aditya Seal gives an earnest performance and hints of greater potential.

What’s Not?
Punch lines are the ‘jaan’ of any comedy movie and I felt that the dialogues didn’t do justice to the ample, interesting situations throughout the movie or the genre. Also, the dramatization used to potray how Arjun’s character is scarred due to his failed marriage could have been treated better.

Verdict:
Mere Husband Ki Biwi is a full on time-pass masala entertainer that the whole family can enjoy. So if you are done with the many back-to-back over the top action dramas and thrillers, here’s a film that you should not miss watching. This is also a genre best enjoyed in collective viewing in theatre, so while this will make its way to OTT eventually, I recommend that you watch it on the big screen for the perfect experience.
