As tensions increased along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Jammu region, the Indian and Pakistani armies held an important meeting on Friday, February 21, 2025. The purpose of the meeting was to find ways to reduce recent clashes.
An official said that senior army officers from both countries met at the Chakkan-Da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch district. The meeting took place between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. and focused on discussing the rising border tensions. However, after the meeting, no joint statement was issued, and the Army did not share any details about what was discussed.
Escalation of firing and explosions on the LoC
The meeting happened after new incidents of firing and explosions were reported along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district within the past 24 hours. On Friday morning, there was an explosion near the LoC, but security officials did not immediately say what caused it.
Since 2020, India and Pakistan have mostly followed a ceasefire agreement at the LoC. However, both countries have recently blamed each other for breaking this agreement. The Indian Army said that on February 16, Pakistani troops fired “small arms” at an Indian post. Meanwhile, the Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported that on February 12, two Pakistani soldiers were injured in what they called an “unprovoked ceasefire violation by Indian troops” in the Deva and Bagsar sectors.
Recent skirmishes and losses
In the past two months, there have been at least six clashes in the Jammu, Rajouri, and Poonch districts. These incidents involved sniper attacks and explosions.
Two Indian soldiers, including a captain, lost their lives because of an improvised explosive device (IED). Two other soldiers were injured by sniper fire. It is still not clear whether the Pakistani army or militants were responsible for these attacks.
During this time, two people suspected of trying to cross the border illegally were also killed in Poonch.
Commitment to peace on the border
Officials stated that the meeting aimed to “push peace on the LoC and to abide by the commitment made in the 2003 and 2020 ceasefire agreements” between the two armies. While no official resolution was announced, such meetings are considered a step towards reducing tensions and maintaining stability along the border.
