Superboys of Malegaon movie review: It was back in the 90s in Malegaon, where Nisar Sheikh, whose family owned a single screen in the village, dreamt of becoming a filmmaker. Coming to Mumbai and trying his luck in the maximum city was a distant dream and as others before him had said, ‘impossible’. But giving up on his dream wasn’t an option either. Fuelled by his passion and supported by his group of friends, he decided to bring Mumbai to Malegaon, to create a movie by the people and for the people of Malegaon. He wanted to create something ‘mukkammal’ – something that is perfect, something that stays. Little did he know then, that his journey will become so special that it will indeed force Mumbai to come to Malegaon and make a film on his life. Producers Tiger Baby, Excel Entertainment and Zoya Akhtar, director Reema Kagti found the story of this man so interesting and inspiring that they made it into a full-fledged film. Superboys of Malegaon releases in theatres in India on February 28, after receiving acclaim and standing ovations at various film festivals around the world. Here’s a Superboys of Malegaon review to help you know all about the film and if it is for you.

What is Superboys of Malegaon All About
Superboys of Malegaon tells the story of Nisar Sheikh (Adarsh Gourav) and his friends Shafique (Shashank Arora), Farroq (Vineet Kumar Singh), who get together to make a film to suit the sensibilities of the audience in Malegaon. They first made a spoof on the iconic Sholay, calling it Malegaon Ke Sholay, shooting and editing the film with the limited means that they had and the vast knowledge that they gained by watching Hollywood films and their BTS during the end credits. What started as a passion, soon turned into a new hope to earn money, fame and respect and rise to celebrity status in their small town. The film shows how these superboys gave wings to their dream, silencing the naysayers around them and overcoming their personal and professional challenges to change their reality.

What’s Hot?
The story of Nisar Sheikh and his friends the ‘Superboys’ of Malegaon is interesting enough to make a good watch. The way these young ambitious men realised their dream to become filmmakers, actors and producers is truly inspiring. It is very easy to blame circumstances and limitations for not going the extra mile, but Nisar’s story highlights how passion and dedication is all you need to overcome any and all limitations.
The film is made in a heart-warming way and Reema Kagti brings this story to life on celluloid without letting go of the rawness of the setting of Malegaon or the innocence of the characters that are inspired by real life people. She has done it earlier too in films like Gully Boy and she weaves the same magic here as well. The performances are top notch. Adarsh brings the confidence and conviction to his portrayal of Nisar Sheikh. Vineet Kumar Singh is already winning accolades for his performance in Chhaava and here he yet again delivers a delightful performance as the writer who is frustrated about not getting the respect and due that he deserves. Shashank as a bestie who blindly trusts Nisar, turns on his natural charm as he plays a character who has conviction about what he can do but no confidence about expressing the same.
Not just the three main characters played by Adarsh, Vineet and Shashank, but the others too will impress you with their effortless acting. All the characters are based on real people and you will find them highly relatable.
Talking about the dialogues, there is a line in the film, ‘Writer Baap Hota Hai’ and the writing and dialogues by Varun Grover prove the same. They elevate the film, beautifully bringing out the essence of the story and the characters.
The background score and the music complements the story, staying true to the narrative and the world in which this is set.
What’s Not?
While the story tells us about Nisar Shaikh’s life till 2004, there is no mention about what happened in the 10-11 years post that. It would have been nice to get a glimpse of him and his life at the moment. Or to explore how bringing Mumbai and films to Malegaon impacted his and his family’s life.
Verdict
Watch Superboys of Malegaon for the sheer love of cinema. The movie brings to life a heart-warming story of a man who dared to dream and made the impossible possible. Watch Superboys of Malegaon for performances that will touch your heart. It is not every Friday that special stories like this get a grand big screen space, so do not miss this chance to celebrate all that is beautiful about Indian cinema.
