Why Did These Models Get Discontinued in India?
The Mercedes two-seater cars are a symbol of respect and luxury, but it wasn’t able to withstand the conditions and market of India. Here are the reasons why:
- Road Conditions – Although, Mercedes shows a lot of promise with its high-class technology, power, and attractive design. Cars like Roadster, SLC, etc which are high-performance vehicles with low ground clearance could not face the rough and unforgiving roads of India.
- Weather and Challenges – Let’s assume that you can find good roads for your high-performance Mercedes car. But, India’s weather is not that merciful, especially for convertible cars like Roadster whose retractable roofs are weak against the hot sun of India. Similarly, monsoon brings a new set of challenges with its heavy rainfall. It can damage the soft roof of the convertible.
- Cost of ownership and maintenance – The ownership and maintenance cost of a 2-seater Mercedes in India is quite high, due to the rough Indian roads which require servicing daily. The cost of servicing these high-performance cars is higher as compared to the majority of Indian cars.
- Emission norms and regulations – India is shifting towards stricter emission norms after the introduction of BS VI, inspired by Euro Standard VI. Mercedes cars like SLC and Roadster were launched before. To adjust according to these norms Mercedes with have to significantly change their components, which might be quite a hassle for them.
- Limited market demand – Most of India’s population belongs to the lower-middle class and their requirement isn’t any high-performance car. They require something affordable that can fulfill their daily requirements. Hence, the reason behind the low demand for such cars in the Indian market.
Conclusion
The discontinuation of 2-seater Mercedes cars like Roadster, SLC, etc especially in India comes down to several factors such as – Climate conditions, market requirements, and many more reasons. But, Mercedes continues to find solutions, newer models, and technologies for making their two-seaters ready to face Indian Roads. Excited to see what lies ahead of us.
