As I reflect on my recent day tour to Gangasagar Island with my mother on January 25, I am filled with a sense of spiritual fulfillment and awe at the natural beauty of this sacred site.
Located at the confluence of the Ganges River and the Bay of Bengal, Gangasagar is a place of immense religious significance, attracting thousands of pilgrims each year, especially during the Makar Sankranti festival in January. In this blog,
I will share our personal experience, highlighting the key details and attractions that make Gangasagar a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a blend of spirituality and scenic landscapes.
Introduction to Gangasagar
Gangasagar, situated on Sagar Island, is renowned for its spiritual aura and breathtaking views. The island is home to the revered Kapil Muni Temple, where devotees come to offer prayers and take a holy dip in the Ganges. The annual Gangasagar Mela, which occurs during Makar Sankranti, is the second-largest congregation of Hindu pilgrims after the Kumbha Mela, drawing visitors from all over India and beyond.
Planning Your Trip
When to Visit:
The best time to visit Gangasagar is from October to March, when the weather is mild and less humid. However, January is particularly popular due to the Makar Sankranti celebrations, which can attract large crowds.
How to Reach:
The most convenient way to reach Gangasagar from Kolkata is by car, which can be hired for a day trip. The journey involves driving to Lot 8 in Kakdwip, crossing the Muriganga River by ferry to reach Kachuberia on Sagar Island, and then taking local transport to Gangasagar.
Our Day Tour Experience
Morning Departure from Kolkata
We began our day early, around 5:00 AM, to ensure we reached Kakdwip by 9:00 AM. The drive from Kolkata to Kakdwip takes about three to four hours, depending on traffic conditions. The scenic route passes through Diamond Harbour Road, offering glimpses of rural Bengal’s lush green landscapes.
Crossing the Muriganga River
Upon reaching Lot 8 in Kakdwip, we boarded a ferry to cross the Muriganga River, which took us to Kachuberia on Sagar Island. The ferry ride is approximately 30 minutes and offers stunning views of the river and surrounding wetlands.
Exploring Gangasagar
Once on the island, we hired an e-rickshaw to travel to the Kapil Muni Temple and the sea bathing area. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site, and the holy dip in the Ganges is a deeply spiritual experience. We also visited the Bharat Sevashram Sangha and took some time to enjoy the serene beach and its scenic beauty.
Return Journey
After completing our tour of Gangasagar, we returned to Kachuberia to catch the ferry back to Kakdwip. The return journey was smooth, and we reached Kolkata by evening, bringing back memories of our spiritual expedition.
