Doctors at a government hospital in Berhampur, Odisha, recently removed a broken piece of a knife lodged in a man’s lung. The discovery came after Santosh Das, a 24-year-old, was experiencing persistent health issues. Doctors were surprised to find that the knife had been inside his body for nearly three years.
Santosh, who had been living with a dry cough and fever for over a year, finally sought help when his condition worsened, and he began coughing up blood. Doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur discovered, through an X-ray, that the sharp piece of metal was stuck in his lung. The object, measuring 8 centimeters in length, had been there since Santosh was stabbed in Bengaluru three years ago while working as a laborer, according to PTI.
At the time of the attack, Santosh was treated for the wound and continued living a healthy life for two years. However, his symptoms began to worsen, prompting him to seek further medical attention. The discovery of the knife piece, confirmed through a CT scan and bronchoscopy, shocked both Santosh and the medical team.
Santosh underwent a right thoracotomy, a type of surgery in which the doctors removed the metal piece from his lung. Dr. Sahoo, who was part of the medical team, mentioned that the operation went smoothly without complications. He was surprised that the knife piece had not caused more harm to Santosh’s organs despite being lodged in his body for such a long time.
“A group of around eight doctors in CTVS and anaesthesia departments, nursing officers, and para-medical staff conducted the surgery and successfully removed the sharp metal piece,” said Dr. Sahoo. “We were surprised that the sharp metal piece did not damage his organs.”
Santosh’s case isn’t the first time such a bizarre situation has made headlines. Earlier this year, a man from Madhya Pradesh was also in the news when doctors removed a 16-inch bottle gourd (lauki) from his rectum.
