The denim shirt has found (and continues to find) new ways to reinvent itself. Surviving the passage of time, it has gone through dozens of styles – from cowboys and the Wild West to Scandinavian minimalism, folk musicians and the boho-chic. This spring-summer is no exception: it’s back with a vengeance, and it’s back because it works without pretending to. But what else is the reason for this obvious revival in 2025? Well, every now and then, the body asks for something comfortable and functional, something not too serious, but not too basic or unfunny either. And, of course, the denim shirt meets all these requirements. Not only does it respond to the vibe of “I dressed with the first thing I caught, and it works,” this look saves us on the days when we don’t want to think too much but want to get the look just right.
Its origins date back to the late nineteenth century, with Levi Strauss and his well-known denim workwear. However, it was not until 1930 when this fabric became popular among the film industry and, shortly thereafter, denim shirts became the fetish garment of every closet. As for recent references, we saw denim hero at Chloé with western embroidery and at Celine with glitter and rock aesthetics. But where they really reach the category of omnipresent in 2025 is on the street: fashionistas who combine it with giant trench coats, girls on bikes with denim shirts and canvas tote bags, ladies with turned-up collars and red lips… everywhere you look you’ll see it, and the best thing is: you never get tired of seeing it. Because that’s the thing about this garment: it fits everyone, but above all, it suits everyone. The secret? Don’t try to modernize it too much; the denim shirt is already modern because it’s timeless. You just have to find the way (or ways) to wear it according to your style.
With a blazer and/or dress pants
One of the most interesting combinations is to wear it oversized, in contrast with more formal garments – see it under a structured blazer, or tucked into tailored trousers. This mix with casual is the perfect balance that works for both the office and an impromptu lunch. Add loafers, heels or on-trend sneakers depending on the occasion, and et voilà.

Denim with denim
For years, a total denim look was seen as mixing red and pink in the same outfit: almost blasphemous. Now both combinations are an absolute trend, and thank goodness: they couldn’t be more flattering. The trick with denim is to mix shades or textures and put the finishing touch with accessories; a worn shirt with dark jeans, a flashy belt, cowboy boots or a leather bag. Don’t be afraid to add information to an outfit that, when worn well, is all personality.

Over your favourite dress
The ideal look for the days between seasons: wear the denim shirt over a lingerie, printed, flowing, or knitted dress. Or, in other words, soften the romantic with a boho touch. Tuck it in, add a long necklace or a scarf around your neck – another absolute trend this spring – and let the outfit speak for itself.

Knotted to the body, just like in the nineties
A silhouette that is coming back, and rightly so. Knotting the shirt at the waist over a skirt or high-waisted pants enhances the figure with little effort, and gives an unexpected twist to a simple look. Try it with flowing fabrics, with a matching midi skirt or like Emrata: combine a total denim look in different shades, oversize it and add a maxi knot. More is more has never been so minimal.

With totally unexpected garments
The denim shirt gains strength when mixed with what doesn’t naturally combine. That is, a tulle skirt, metallic pants, leather garments or even animal print; and the dialogue between the utilitarian and the sophisticated has something magnetic. Here, less is more: let the shirt be the point of balance.

In dress version
If Kate Moss confirms it, there is no room for error. There are a thousand and one varieties of dresses with this ad hoc fabric, but another very good option would be to get a shirt a few sizes bigger and use it as either a dress or overshirt, or in relaxed and oversized looks. And, if not, you can always raid the closet of parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts.

A classic: as an overshirt
One more layer for winter layering – or as the only warm garment now that the temperatures are starting to give us a break. The denim (overshirt) is, however, an incombustible and all-terrain basic. And let’s not forget the best friend of this garment in spring: a tank top underneath. Easy, quick and effective.
