There are some Bollywood stories that will never be forgotten. Some of the love stories, breakup, scandals and more are remembered from time to time. So here’s a story from the most glorious era of Bollywood. The story is of two of the most cherished and loved stars of the industry – Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Rumours had it that they were in love and even wanted to get married to each other. But destiny had different plans.
In a recent interview, veteran actress Mumtaz spoke about Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s connection. In an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Mumtaz revealed the actual reason behind their split. Earlier, it was rumoured that disapproval of Madhubala’s father and a court case were the reason behind Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s separation. However, Mumtaz shared that it was because Madhubala could not bear children that Dilip Kumar broke up with her.
Mumtaz mentioned that it was Dilip Kumar who broke up with Madhubala and later married Saira Banu who was his fan. She was quoted saying, “Nobody can ever doubt that she was madly in love with him. She was madly in love with him. But Dilip saab ko aulaad chahiye thi (Dilip saab wanted a child, you see). Perhaps it was in this desperation to have a child that he married Saira. Madhubala told me herself. I would go to meet her, and she was not well at all. She would say, ‘If I ever loved anyone in my life, it was Yusuf. But when he found out that I can’t conceive…’ She would call him Yusuf. The doctor told her that she would die in childbirth because of her heart problem.”
Mumtaz further added that it wasn’t Dilip Kumar’s fault. She shared that every man wants to have a child. But she also added that it was ‘tragic’ that Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu did not have a child.
Madhubala and Dilip Kumar reportedly fell in love on the sets of the film Tarana. However, they called it quits after dating for almost 9 years. Madhubala then married Kishore Kumar. She passed away at the age of 36.
