Name: Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning movie review Cast: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg Director: Christopher McQuarrie Rating: ★★★
The eighth and supposedly the final Mission: Impossible movie is here. By staying true to its form, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning doesn’t just come across as a big, but also a bold ride. Reason? The movie has Tom Cruise doing what he loves and does best. Yes, he is back to saving the world and leaving an indelible impact on fans by performing his jaw-dropping stunts. This time around, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has to combat his biggest threat yet – an all-powerful AI program called ‘The Entity’.
The movie picks up exactly where Dead Reckoning (2023) left off. Ethan Hunt and the IMF crew are back in action, and busy chasing down his old enemy Gabriel (Esai Morales). Ethan’s mission? To do everything possible to stop Gabriel from using the AI program ‘The Entity’ to bring about nuclear war. He has to find the source code, dive to the bottom of the Arctic ocean as it is stuck on Russian submarine Sevastopol, and shut it all down before the world goes kaboom.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning doesn’t really kick off in a strong and forceful way. Instead, for over an hour, everybody – including Ethan Hunt, top CIA bosses, and a few politicians which also includes the US president, played by Angela Bassett – gets engaged in serious conversations trying to understand what they should do about Gabriel. So those expecting the adrenaline-pumping opening would be disappointed. Despite such disappointments, nothing can affect your love for Tom Cruise because he ensures his obsession with doing his own insane stunts gets intense with each Mission: Impossible movie. All to ensure, it makes for the perfect recipe for action movie magic. What really makes the Mission: Impossible movies stand out from the usual blockbusters are its jaw-dropping stunts performed without any digital touch-ups. Besides taking a plunge into the freezing Arctic Ocean, Tom also performs a wild mid-air stunt where he literally walks on a plane wing mid-flight. Both these stunts are absolute showstoppers which prove why nobody can be pitted against Tom Cruise in being a real-life action figure.
Since chasing something as vague as a “source code” to combat an invisible AI supervillain doesn’t offer edge-of-the-seat excitement, the film does get a bit slow. But director Christopher McQuarrie does everything required to keep things feeling intense. He constantly reminds us that Ethan has a lot to lose — particularly the people he cares for. When the movie begins, there’s a dark fight scene where the viewers are only made to hear wild sound effects, but Hayley Atwell’s reactions, and a gory aftermath sets the movie’s tone. This prepares the viewers for the emotional punches that come next. But here’s the real question everyone’s asking – is it the fitting farewell? No. Is it really the end? It may feel like an ending, but it ties up loose threads from the last seven movies in what many would agree is the blockbuster way. Does it slam the door shut? No. After watching what Tom Cruise does in this film despite being in his 60s, he’s clearly not done.
