Major telecom outage hits Spain, emergency services issue alternate numbers

NEW DELHI: A large-scale communication outage disrupted internet and landline services across Spain on Tuesday, affecting thousands of users and even impacting emergency response systems in multiple regions.According to local media reports, the disruption began early on May 20 and appears to be linked to a network upgrade being carried out by Spanish telecom giant Telefónica. The outage affected customers of Movistar and O2—two major providers under Telefónica—with many users reporting a loss of fibre optic connectivity. The impact was so widespread that emergency services in several communities issued alternative contact numbers, as Spain’s national emergency number ‘112’ was affected. ‘112’ is Spain’s equivalent to the UK’s 999 emergency line.Spanish news outlet El Diario reported that while the network upgrade by Telefónica is the suspected cause of the disruption, it remains unclear whether other internet issues experienced across the country are also directly related to the company’s ongoing work.
