Air India Crash: Man Returns Rs. 60,000 Cash, 'Mangalsutras', 70 'Tola' Gold Jewellery Found At Site

When the news broke of the Air India flight 787-8 Dreamliner Boeing crashed into a medical college area on June 12, 2025, Raju Patel did not stop. A resident of Ahmedabad, the 56-year-old, ended up showing his honesty in chaos and rushed to the site for the on-ground rescue operations. He reached BJ Medical College in only 15 minutes. Now, Raju Patel showed his honesty by returning the retrieved costly valuables to the cops.

For the unversed, the flight was headed to London from Ahmedabad International Airport and was under the command of Late Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and Late Flight Officer Clive Kunder. Within 38 seconds, the flight crashed, killing 241 passengers on board and more than two dozen on the ground. Raju was the first one to remove the victims and also retrieved gold jewellery, cash worth Rs. 60,000, from the debris. Raju, in an interview with Aaj Tak, shared:

“We recovered Rs 60,000 in cash, foreign currency, laptops, mobile phones, ID cards, and gold, including necklaces, bangles, mangalsutras, rings, and silver items. By 9 pm, we had collected all the belongings of the passengers that we could find.”

When the rescue officials came, Raju felt responsible and took the task of finding valuable items from the debris, which also included documents. It was after toiling for three hours, near the Atulyam Building, where the engine of the aircraft crashed, that they used iron rods to remove debris, and there found a few bags.

When Raju Patel reached the site, he saw dead bodies beyond recognition

Raju was one of the few people who reached the site first, and the commotion was uncontrollable. He could only see thick blankets of smoke, rising flames, cries and screams in the unimaginable air. He did not take much time, but used the clothes, mats given by locals to take the injured to the hospital. In his words:

“When I reached the crash site within 15 minutes, all I could see was thick black smoke. After a while, when the fire brigade partially brought the fire under control, we began rescue operations.”

Raju Patel retrieved 70 tolas of gold jewellery from the crash site

Raju and his team tried their best to pull out the victims and search their belongings which spoke about tales of the innocent lives lost very soon. Every family member of the crash is living with the pain and trauma of losing their loved one, most uncertainly. A report by the Times Of India revealed that roundabout 70 tolas of gold jewellery, copy of Bhagavad Gita which belonged to cabin crew member, Maithili Patil, was handed over to the cops. Raju remembered:

“For the first 15 to 20 minutes, we could barely get close. The fire was too intense, but once the first fire brigade and 108 ambulances arrived, we jumped in to help.”


Raju shared that the area did not have any stretchers around, so the team used sarees and bedsheets to carry the injured. Raju and his crew stayed on the site till 9 p.m. To serve the victims and then find the lost belongings that were shattered into a million pieces on the charred land that killed the dreams of many who had hoped for new beginnings in London.
