Tanuj Virwani Talks About His Extended Cameo As Chirag Oberoi In Rana Naidu 2
Tanuj shared that what drew him to Chirag was the character’s subtle complexity and unpredictable nature, which allowed him to break free from the intense or flamboyant roles he has often played in the past. Talking to Bollywood Bubble, he said, “When you’re the lead on a show, there’s a certain sense of responsibility and you know, you kind of have to play within that particular box, especially if it’s a recurring character over here. My character Chirag Oberoi on Rana Naidu season 2 was almost secondary character and you could you could call it an extended cameo and as a result of that, I did not have to take care of the heavy lifting of course you have Rana, you have Venkatesa, you have Surveen, you have Abhishek, you have the entire recurring star cast.”
He embraced a more restrained, layered performance style, making deliberate changes in his body language and tone to reflect Chirag’s enigmatic presence, and added, “So when me and are showed Karan, we sat down and we were kind of fleshing this character out. We thought, hey, listen, how about we kind of give him like this very entitled South Bombay Sobo sort of accent. It comes across in his tonality, in his body language and I thought that would be a good way into this character. So definitely in that way it helped. Even though I have played city centric characters in the past, this allowed me a different way in and hence it’s a completely different and new character.”
According to Tanuj, these adjustments helped him challenge himself as an actor and contribute meaningfully to the show’s gritty narrative, even with limited screen time. He further talked about how he ensures that his portrayal of Chirag remains authentic amidst such high-stakes drama and stands out among stellar cast, and said, “You have to trust your instinct and as an actor, I’m very instinctive. It’s not always just about acting or being performative. It’s also about reacting and responding to what your co-star and what the other characters are seeing in that particular moment. Most of the scenes that I inhabit on this show have either Rana, Venkatesh, Kriti or Rajat sir. When you’re performing with high, high level actors, you just have to be ultra, super, super tuned in and that’s what I try to do day in and day out. I don’t look at what the results may or may not be I just try and focus on the process, on my process and just to the best of my abilities.”
