Near full capacity ice cream plant in Zaheerabad gives wings to Hatsun Agro expansion

Private sector dairy Hatsun Agro Products has ramped up production at its ice cream factory in Govindapur, Zaheerabad, ahead of the peak demand season and as it looks to grow footprint to more States, including West Bengal, Bihar and Gujarat.

Production touched 1.27 lakh kilograms recently as against the installed capacity of 1.30 lakh a day, company executives told mediapersons at the plant on Monday. Previously, production at the plant was 1 lakh kg/day, they added.

Established in 2022, it is one of the largest facilities of the Arun Icecream maker and accounts for a chunk of the capacity. Hatsun Agro’s other ice cream plants are in Salem with an installed capacity of 70,000 kg/day and Chennai that can produce upto 15,000 kg/day. The Zaheerabad plant is located on a land parcel of 113 acres with scope for further expansion. It also makes chocolates, the executives explained.

On the markets the company is taking its ice cream, they said Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well as as parts of Maharashtra were strong markets for the company. Beyond these the company is looking at markets in Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Gujarat and Bihar.

April-June is the peak season and production to meet the demand starts now, they said, adding ice cream business contributes around ₹1,100 crore to the total revenue of Hatsun Agro. The company had reported a total revenue of more than ₹8,000 crore for 2023-24 and ₹6,467.95 crore for the first nine months (ended December) of current financial year.

“Reaching this production milestone reflects our dedication to leveraging advanced technology and sustainable practices in our operations,” Hatsun Agro Product Chairman R.G. Chandramogan said in a release on the Govindapur facility. The company has embarked on a programme to educate school students on sustainability and ice cream production by organising trips for them to the plant near here.
