In a bid to manage the Maha Kumbh Mela crowd, the authorities in Varanasi have suspended the famous Ganga Aarti for the general public until February 5. It was done in response to the overwhelming surge of crowds in the city. The decision is aimed at preventing overcrowding and ensuring public safety. The aarti is performed at Dashashwamedh Ghat and is among the prime attractions of Varanasi.
In addition to this, other ghats such as Sheetla Ghat and Assi Ghat have also suspended the aarti. The police have requested Varanasi people to avoid unnecessary outings and cooperate with authorities. The Ganga Aarti, a major spiritual event, usually attracts large crowds of devotees and tourists. With the suspension, the authorities expect to ease congestion in the region.
The situation has also been compounded by the ongoing movement of devotees returning from the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Lakhs of pilgrims who had participated in the Kumbh are now stranded at Varanasi’s Cantt and Banaras railway stations.
