One Day – Series Review – A Modern Classic in Romantic Series
When you think of some of the modern-day romantic classics, what are some of the names that come to your mind – For me, standout mentions include the revered Before Sunrise series, the enduring favorites The Notebook and Titanic, and the touching A Walk to Remember, among others. Now, there’s a new contender in the mix.
Netflix’s limited series, bearing the same title as David Nicholls’ 2009 novel, joins the ranks. This adaptation of Nicholls’ acclaimed book, previously brought to life on the big screen with Anne Hathaway, made its debut during the second week of February, fittingly coinciding with the romantic ambiance of Valentine’s Week.
I haven’t read the original book but since the series has come out so well I had to add it to my to-read list.
The plot
One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew. As the name suggests the story is about a single day i.e. 15th July that spans two decades. The story begins with 15th July 1988 on their graduation day and then relives the 15th of July every year after that, offering glimpses into their evolving journey.”

My Review – One Day – Netflix Limited Series
I wasn’t very keen on watching the series even after watching the trailer, I tend to favor books over their on-screen adaptations. However, the series garnered such positive reviews that I felt compelled to give it a chance.
To my surprise, the series proved to be a delightful departure from the norm, offering romantic genre enthusiasts something to celebrate. In an OTT landscape dominated by releases from the thriller, fantasy, crime, and documentary genres, romantic offerings are often scarce and, when present, tend to lack depth.
The series unfolds across various locations in the UK, each adding to the ambiance and setting in meaningful ways.
At its core, the narrative celebrates enduring friendship and the evolution of love, with the underlying theme of heartbreak lending it a timeless quality. Particularly noteworthy is the subtle exploration of consent—a nuanced touch that enriches the storytelling.
Dexter inhabits a privileged world where parental concerns about his future underscore the potential impact of wealth on his sense of responsibility. In contrast, Emma hails from the working-class streets of Leeds, her passion for social causes driving her to action. The inherent disparity in their backgrounds sets the stage for a potential future classic.
The series’ integration of music and songs is masterful and seamlessly woven into the fabric of the storyline to enhance its emotional resonance.
While I understand that this series is based on the 2009 book of the same title, I believe it’s time for writers to move away from the clichéd trope of killing off the romantic leads. This predictable plot device, if not handled with care, risks evoking comparisons to older films or adaptations.
One Day is akin to a finely aged wine, evoking feelings of nostalgia, heartbreak, and, above all, love with exquisite precision.
It’s remarkable to witness how David conceptualized this story years ago, yet its relevance endures. The nostalgia, the unassuming chemistry between the characters, and the unpredictability of their actions all contribute to its captivating allure.

The dynamic chemistry between Ambika and Leo is the driving force behind the success of this series. Whether it’s the contrast in their character portrayals or their real-life appearances, both elements significantly contribute to the series’ appeal. Personally, Leo was an impeccable choice for the role, effortlessly embodying the emotions of restraint. His striking looks and undeniable charm undoubtedly enhance the viewing experience, reminiscent of a young Leonardo DiCaprio.
The supporting cast, despite their limited screen time, effectively fulfills their roles. Notably, —-‘s portrayal of Dex’s mother leaves a lasting impression, showcasing impressive talent and depth.

Upon delving into the initial chapters of the book, I was struck by the discovery that many of their conversations were already captured within its pages. Much like in Before Sunrise, it’s enthralling to witness the characters’ layers unfold through these dialogues, observing the evolution of their perspectives over two decades.
