MG Majestor vs Nissan X-Trail

MG Majestor is the new flagship SUV which will sit above the Gloster in MG’s Indian portfolio

In this post, we are comparing the recently unveiled MG Majestor and Nissan X-Trail on the basis of specs, features, design, etc. MG has been in the process of expanding its portfolio in India. While its main focus is on EVs, it has even ventured into the high-end luxury SUV category with the Gloster. Interestingly, the Majestor will sit even above the Gloster in our market going forward. It is based on the D90 Max which is sold in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, we can check out the kind of features it will offer. On the other hand, the Nissan X-Trail is a CBU SUV which has been introduced by the Japanese car marque in India to boost its brand image. Let us check out this thorough comparison between the two large SUVs to help you choose the better alternative for you.

MG Majestor vs Nissan X-Trail – Specs

Since the MG Majestor is not officially launched in India, we can’t know for sure what will power it. However, there are enough news reports floating around on the internet from credible sources which say that it will share the powertrain options with the Gloster. Therefore, we will witness the familiar 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 218 PS and 480 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. Note that in Gloster, it is also available in a lower state of tune making 163 PS and 375 Nm. Performing the transmission duties will be a sporty 8-speed automatic gearbox which will power all four wheels for a rugged off-roading performance. More details will emerge at the launch.

On the other hand, the Nissan X-Trail comes with a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine with variable compression ratio and 12 V mild hybrid setup which generates a healthy 163 hp and 300 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. This engine pairs with a shift-by-wire CVT automatic gearbox which powers the front wheels. Nissan claims that this gearbox has negligible rubber-band effect typically associated with CVTs. Despite being a small engine, the performance is not lacking whatsoever.

Design and Dimensions

The exterior styling is one area which is quite distinct for both these large SUVs. The new MG Majestor bears a slightly more aggressive demeanour in comparison to the X-Trail or the Gloster. At the front, the Majestor gets sleek LED DRLs on the extreme edges with a slim belt connecting them and a colossal rectangular grille area with a sturdy skid plate towards the lower end, while the main headlamp cluster is impressively stacked on the extreme edges of the bumper vertically while the lower part gets sturdy elements. Moving down the sides reveals black side pillars, faux roof rails, massive alloy wheels, chunky wheel arches with matte black materials and healthy side steps to enhance the ingress and egress characteristics. Completing the exterior appearance is a colossal connected LED taillamp panel which runs the width of the SUV, a sporty bumper, a roof-mounted spoiler, dual exhaust pipes and a solid skid plate section at the rear. It would definitely attract a lot of potential customers on the roads.

On the other hand, the Nissan X-Trail is definitely not as big as the MG Majestor. At the front, we are able to experience the ‘V-motion’ grille with the use of dark chrome, a sporty bumper, a rugged skid plate, a striking LED headlamp cluster split into two sections, LED DRLs integrated into it, a tall bonnet, and more. On the sides, the SUV carries solid side body skirtings, colossal wheel arches, faux roof rails, stylish diamond-cut alloy wheels, black side pillars, etc. Finally, the tail end contains a wrap-around LED taillamp unit, a high-mounted stop lamp and an integrated roof spoiler. Overall, the SUV embodies the new-age design theme from the Japanese car marque. Interestingly, there are only three colour options – Diamond Black, Champagne Silver and Pearl White.

My View

It is definitely not easy to choose between these two compelling propositions. However, we must first wait for the official launch of the MG Majestor in India. It is said that it will be sold alongside the Gloster. Hence, the British car marque will definitely make it ultra-premium to ensure that it is worthy of being called the flagship SUV from MG in India. On the other hand, the X-Trail continues to draw customers in due to the image this moniker has in India. Remember, one of the earlier versions was on sale in our market too. Hence, people associate it with affordable luxury. Unfortunately, due to being a CBU vehicle, the prices are too high for a vehicle of this size. Perhaps, that could be a reason for people to consider the much bigger and plusher MG Majestor. In any case, let us wait for the price reveal. Then you can visit your nearest MG and Nissan dealerships to experience the two SUVs in the flesh. That will help you make up your mind.
