UV rays don’t just damage your skin—they can actually aggravate acne and lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), age spots, and long-term damage. They can intensify acne flare-ups and leave scarring and pigmentation behind.

Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every single day is honestly one of the best things you can do for your skin. Besides sun protection, it keeps summer breakouts in check and even cuts down the risk of long-term skin issues.

But there’s good news: many newer sunscreen formulas can actually help with acne, especially those containing ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

5. Switch to lightweight, non-comedogenic products

When it’s hot and humid, your skin produces more sebum (the skin’s natural oil). According to a study by the British Journal of Dermatology, for every 1°C increase in temperature, sebum secretion rises by about 10%.

A layer of heavy makeup, thick creams and even greasy sunscreen formulas can clog your pores, causing even more heat pimples. Your skin needs products that nourish without suffocating your skin.

Look for ‘non-comedogenic’ labeled products—they’re the ones specially made to avoid clogging your pores or causing blackheads and whiteheads. Basically, they’re skin-friendly and breakout-safe.

Choose:

  • Lightweight, oil-free foundations
  • Gel-based or water-based moisturizers and lotion
  • Gel-based or fluid-texture sunscreen
  • Tinted moisturizers, BB creams, or CC cream
  • Non-comedogenic facial oils
  • Lightweight body wash if you’re prone to body breakouts (bacne, chestne)

Limit cream-based products and go for textures that don’t weigh your skin down and feel light on the pores.

Bonus: if your products contain acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid (a BHA), it’ll help to gently exfoliate inside the pores and keep them clear.

6. Don’t ignore your diet!

All the products in the world won’t help if your diet’s working against you.

First, try to avoid foods known to trigger acne:

  • Sugary treats (candy, milk chocolate, sugary drinks, sodas and syrups)
  • Dairy (especially milk, cheese and ice cream)
  • Processed foods (fried foods and processed snacks)
  • Fast food (burgers, pizza, fries, chicken nuggets)
  • Refined carbs (white bread, sugary cereals, white rice, cakes, cookies)

These foods usually cause inflammation, making you break out. But you don’t have to cut them out entirely—just eat them in moderation. If a food consistently triggers your acne, try reducing or temporarily cutting it out to see if that helps.

Now, onto what foods to eat to clear your skin:

  • More seasonal fruits: watermelon, strawberries, apricots, mangoes, cantaloupe, peaches, spinach, kale
  • More seasonal veggies: cucumbers, bell peppers, celery, sweet potato, pumpkin
  • Whole grains: oats, quinoa, brown rice
  • Probiotics: yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha
  • Lean grilled meats
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: grilled salmon, mackerel, tuna salad, walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds sprinkled on salads or smoothies

…and loads of water!

7. Keep your hands off your face!

Guilty as charged—we all do it.

Resting the chin in our hands, unconsciously touching the face, or rubbing our eyes—hands interact with countless germs and bacteria each day.

Touching your face or picking at the blemishes transfers all the grime your hands pick up throughout the day.

So give your face a break. If you still can’t resist, carry hand sanitizer around to keep your hands clean on the go. Also, use wet wipes or tissue to wipe away the dirt. This simple step can reduce the spread of acne-causing bacteria dramatically and prevent summer acne.
