Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently watched L2: Empuraan, the much-anticipated sequel to Lucifer, amid ongoing controversy surrounding the film. The movie starring Mohanlal, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also directed the film, has drawn criticism from certain quarters, including BJP leaders, over its references to historical events such as the Gujarat riots.

Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed his disappointment with the film on social media, stating that he had initially planned to watch L2: Empuraan after enjoying Lucifer. However, he later learned that the movie underwent multiple edits and re-censorship. “I had watched Lucifer and had liked it. I had said that I would watch the movie Empuraan when I heard it was a sequel. But now I have come to know that the makers themselves have made 17 amendments in the movie and that the movie is undergoing re-censorship. I understand that there were topics in the movie that disturbed Mohanlal fans and other viewers. A movie should be watched as a movie. It can’t be seen as history. Also, any movie that tries to build a story by distorting the truth is doomed to fail. So, will I watch this sequel to Lucifer? No. Am I disappointed by this type of moviemaking? – Yes.”

On the other hand, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended the film and criticized the backlash against it. He described Empuraan as a film that is elevating the Malayalam film industry and condemned what he called a communal hate campaign against the movie, its actors, and its crew. In a note he shared with India Today, he said, “I saw the film Empuraan, which is leading the Malayalam film industry to new heights. I saw the film at a time when the Sangh Parivar is unleashing communalism through widespread hate campaigns against the film, its actors, and crew. The fact that the film references one of the most brutal genocides the country has ever seen has angered the Sangh Parivar, its planners. Not only the followers, but even leaders of the BJP and RSS are raising public threats.”
Vijayan also addressed concerns that the film’s producers were being pressured into making further edits. “There have even been reports that the producers are being forced to re-censor and edit the film under this pressure. This atmosphere of fear created by the Sangh Parivar is worrying. It is not a good thing for democracy for communalists to destroy a work of art and viciously attack artists just because it has taken a stand against communalism and depicted its horror.”
Emphasizing the importance of artistic freedom, Vijayan added, “In a democratic society, the freedom of expression of a citizen must be protected. Violent calls to destroy and ban artwork and artists are the latest manifestations of fascist attitudes. They are a violation of democratic rights. The rights to make films, watch them, enjoy them, evaluate them, agree and disagree, etc., must not be lost. For this, the united voice of this country, which is rooted in democratic secular values, must be raised.”
The controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan continues to fuel discussions about the intersection of cinema, history, and politics, as debates over artistic freedom and political influence in filmmaking remain prominent.
