Sanya Malhotra Talks About The Relevance Of Mrs; I’ve Seen My Mom & Friends Go Through This

When talking about the film Mrs and its relevance, Sanya mentioned how the story isn’t just about one woman’s struggles, but about the experiences of many women around us, including her own mother.

“We’ve seen women like Richa around us. I’ve seen my mom go through it too, not to mention my friends. It’s not about one woman; it’s about the women around us. I also feel like the story (of Mrs) is so relatable, important, and urgent that I wanted to be a part of this film.”

She continued to explain how women, even in this generation, are still deeply affected by patriarchy.

“Women from our generation have been affected too. I think it’s deeply rooted in patriarchy. If they don’t realize that this isn’t the kind of life they should be leading, then that says a lot. I think it’s beyond just one generation.”

Sanya Says Women Balance Household Duties & Work Well, But One Shouldn’t Be Forced Into It

Sanya also reflected on her own family’s experiences, especially with her mother. She shared how her Mom was financially dependent on her father for many years, and how she gave up her own dreams to raise Sanya and her sister.

Though things are changing, Sanya acknowledges that some people still hold onto old traditions and views. “With time and with culture shifting, a lot of things are changing. Many people are still stuck in their ways; they don’t want to move. There are folks who don’t want to change, and that’s okay too. I mean, it’s not like some people are doing it wrong; it’s also a choice. But the thing is, you shouldn’t feel forced into it,” she said.

Talking about her role in Mrs., Sanya emphasized that no woman should feel forced into a role or lifestyle that suffocates her. “In our film, it’s not cool if she feels suffocated because she’s being pushed to do this. There are so many women who are also balancing household duties and work, and they do it really well. But I think if you’re being forced to do something, then it’s definitely wrong,” she shared.

“We put our Moms on a pedestal; whether it’s her cooking or the way she takes care of us – nobody else does that. We are also dehumanizing our Mothers, we need to see them as whole human beings, with their own passions and dreams, not just as people keeping us alive and making sure we’re fed,” she stated.

She also shared how she encourages her mom to focus on her own happiness, rather than just making sure everyone else is okay. “I keep pushing my mom to focus on the things that make her happy, instead of just worrying about whether we’re happy or if we’re eating or if things are going well for us. I want my mom to fulfill her own desires and dreams too,” Sanya added.
