Salman Khan’s Sikandar has flopped and it will struggle to even cross Rs. 125 crores mark. His previous Eid release, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023), ended its run at Rs. 110.53 crores while Dabangg 3 (2019) collected Rs. 146.11 crores. Tiger 3 (2023) did collect Rs. 285.52 crores but it had the padding of a franchise. Also, it was still an underperforming number. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan delivered two back-to-back Rs. 500 crores films in the form of Pathaan and Jawan. The other popular actors have also got an entry into the coveted club. We asked trade experts what Salman Khan should do to reinvent and yet again deliver record-breaking grossers.

Post Sikandar debacle, trade experts suggest what Salman Khan should do to bounce back: “Work on your fitness, reinvent like Shah Rukh. Then return in 2027 with a solid film that will earn Rs. 700 cr”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “I just hope that whichever film he does next, he should work with the best of the people. In a way, I don’t blame him. He opted out of his comfort zone of doing films with Remo Dsouza, Prabhudheva, Farhad Samji, etc. He made this film with A R Murugadoss, who delivered two major hits with Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar. Sadly, the film didn’t work as intended.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, stated, “He definitely needs to reinvent like how Shah Rukh did with Pathaan and Jawan. He has to upgrade himself and maybe needs to do intelligent films like Tiger series. He should do films which are slick but are still commercial mass entertainers. They shouldn’t be mindless and should appeal to the youth as well. It should be today’s films.”

He continued, “SRK made a smart move. He hired a Southern director, backed an intelligent script and told it in a very mass-appealing manner. It also looked like a film of today. That is what Salman needs to do.”

Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal suggested, “Its high time that he concentrates on the director, music and script. The best possibility I see is that he should do a film with Sooraj Barjatya. Or he should do Tiger 4.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, meanwhile, gave a detailed explanation saying, “Salman has faced this twice before in his career. He was launched with Maine Pyar Kiya, a love story. Though Kurbaan and Baaghi did really well, Nischay, Sooryavanshi, Love, Chand Kaa Tukda, etc. failed as they were the continuation of the same image and persona. Then, he reinvented and stepped into the family and comedy zone. He milked this genre with films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Biwi No 1, Judwaa, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, etc. Again, he hit the ceiling when he worked in films like Yuvvraaj, God Tussi Great Ho, etc. Yet again, he saw diminishing returns. For the second time, he reinvented himself with Wanted and Dabangg. This is when we saw a new Salman Khan. It has been the most successful Salman Khan phase and it lasted more than a decade.”

He added, “Now, Salman Khan is stuck with this image. He needs to either add a layer or dimension to it. He also needs a cracker of a script. This is because the star value hasn’t gone anywhere. The pull is still there. You can see it in my cinema and many other theatres across the board that people are still watching his bad films. No other actor in Bollywood can guarantee such an opening with such a bad film. That is the silver lining for Salman Khan.”

Vishek Chauhan continued, “He needs to work with a good, commercial director. We thought A R Murugadoss is that person but he has let him down completely. This is Murugadoss’ worst film ever. Salman needs to surround himself with a newer breed of people. His previous two films have been completely dated. Shah Rukh Khan was in the same position where Salman finds himself today. SRK hit rock bottom with Fan, Jab Harry Met Sejal and Zero. But then he reinvented themselves. He figured out that he needed to become a full-fledged action star, which he had not done before.”

He exulted, “Imagine if Salman works in a historical film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It’ll give his fans and audience an authentic cinematic experience. He should also consider Dabangg 4, Kick 2, Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2, etc. as long as it has a compelling script.”

Salman Khan’s appearance in Sikandar has also come under the scanner. On this, Vishek Chauhan said, “We are used to seeing a very handsome Salman Khan. We are not used to seeing him overweight and where he’s struggling to talk; that’s what was happening in a few scenes. Hence, he should take off for 6 months or a year and work on his fitness and health. Then he should return with a solid film in 2027 and deliver a Rs. 700-800 crores grosser.”
