The 78th Cannes Film Festival continues to serve cinematic brilliance with a dose of glamour, as Day 8 saw a mix of debut appearances, moving reunions, and fashion statements that will be remembered for years. From Scarlett Johansson’s acclaimed debut as director and red carpet moment with husband Colin Jost to Janhvi Kapoor’s stunning debut on the red carpet, the French Riviera was the hub of both style and storytelling.
Scarlett Johansson for Eleanor the Great
A momentous highlight of the evening came with Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, which earned a five-minute standing ovation after its world premiere. Speaking to an emotional crowd, Scarlett emphasized the film’s independent spirit: “No one’s doing it for the money—surprise,” she joked, before adding, “Everyone who came together for this film did it because they believed in the story.”

Arriving on the red carpet in a dreamy Prada gown made of pastel blue chiffon, Scarlett exuded timeless elegance. The ruched bodice and drop-waist design, paired with her iconic red lipstick, struck the perfect balance between soft romanticism and bold sophistication. This was a double debut—on-screen and on the Cannes red carpet—and she didn’t miss a beat on either front. Her husband Colin Jost attended with her.

Team Homebound shines on the red carpet
The Homebound team lit up the red carpet not only with their film but with their thoughtfully curated style. It marked director Neeraj Ghaywan’s second Cannes appearance—his first being the critically acclaimed Masaan in 2015. Janhvi Kapoor floated down the red carpet in a rose-toned Tarun Tahiliani custom ensemble. The outfit featured a handwoven real tissue lehenga and structured corset, with a crushed texture that shimmered under the lights. The raw, uncut hem added a deliberate nod to the authenticity of Indian craft, while a signature TT drape brought sculptural fluidity and poise.

Joining her on the carpet was Ishaan Khatter opted for a deep Bordeaux velvet bandhgala by Gaurav Gupta, paired with a silk wrap shirt and tailored trousers. The standout detail? Intricate black zardozi Celtic knot embroidery, symbolizing inner strength and eternal bonds- both elements which were a subtle nod to Homebound.
Co-star Vishal Jethwa commanded attention in a sharp black power suit by London-based designer Kaushik Velendra. Jewel-studded shoulder pads elevated the look, while a golden dragon neckpiece made a statement. The director, Neeraj Ghaywan had a more understated attire as he walked alongside his cast. Karan Johar, the producer of Homebound, added his signature sartorial edge to the mix in a white Manish Malhotra ensemble, proudly standing alongside his team on the global stage.

Jodie Foster’s in Loewe

Jodie Foster kept it minimal yet meaningful in a sleek silver satin Loewe gown. With a high neckline and soft draping, the ensemble whispered luxury. But it was the tiny shell charm sewn subtly into the dress that captured fashion critics’ attention—a rebellious nod to punk in an otherwise serene look. Foster once again proved that elegance doesn’t need to shout to be seen.
Elsa Hosk’s for Vie Privee

Model Elsa Hosk turned the premiere of Vie Privée into her own personal runway. Her strapless gown by Russian designer Anastasia Zadorina featured an architectural bodice and a hem trimmed with delicate white feathers. The result was an arresting visual blend of structure and softness, encapsulating Cannes’ signature blend of avant-garde and grace.
