Met Gala 2025 took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan on Monday, May 5 and saw several Indian celebrities making grand debuts. From Diljit Dosanjh looking nothing less than an Maharaja in a Prabal Gurung creation to Shah Rukh Khan striking his signature pose of the iconic stairs in a Sabyasachi ensemble, the most fashionable night of the year was dominated by the Indians on the carpet or in ensembles created by Indians.
However, a majority of the world praised the celebs and creations of Indian designers, a section of the public haven’t been too pleased. In fact, a few went a far as branding it as the ‘Chandivalification of Met,’ and this has irked actress Janhvi Kapoor. Scroll below to know what she wrote.
Taking to the comments section of a Diet Sabya post, Janhvi Kapoor expressed her honest thoughts on the ‘Chandivalification of Met’ comment doing the round. The post – on which she comment, read, “DSji how come we have sudden influx of Indians at the Met? Is this the Chandivalification of Met?”
Irked with the notion that Indian celebrities attending the fashion gala has led to it somewhat losing it exclusivity, Ms Kapoor wrote, “It was high time. Our artisans and designers are the best in the world, they deserve the spotlight on a global stage like the Met. As do our icons (heart icon)”. She continued, “Shouldn’t we be happy we’re finally getting our due instead of salty about how seeing our own people on this platform is making it seem a little less aspirational?”
She ended her comment by adding, “Might I say our garments were amongst the most spectacular. Amusing how we’re being almost classist towards ourselves, clearly colonial trauma hasn’t left us”.
Janhvi: The Sense Of Pride I Felt…
Shedding light on Indian craft and artisans have often been overlooked on the global stage, Janhvi stated that the narrative is now slowly shifting and bringing well-deserved recognition to the artists. Janhvi added, “For decades, the work of our artisans has been exported from our country and put on global platforms without credit. For decades, they have borrowed our fabrics, our embroidery, our textiles, our jewellery and presented it as a creation of which they are the rightful owners.”
She concluded by adding, “I’m glad our people are finally getting the chance to represent so much of our work and heritage. If anything, the sense of pride I felt seeing our artists and garments at the Met made whole affair seem even more magical.”
Another comments on the same post read, “We are our own enemies. Chandivalification!? Come on! Get out of your internalized colonial mindset and be proud that we’re finally owning spaces.” Another added, “I for one, am immensely proud of India getting its due representation and my mind is blown on how Daljeet did his homework and delivered! If it was any K-pop star, people would have gone gaga. It’s sad when we get due credit we criticise and when we REALLY do need to criticise, we keep quiet! That’s India for you!”
