Kamal Haasan‘s most-awaited gangster action-drama Thug Life hit the big screens on June 5 and fans are going crazy over the action scenes. The film was surrounded by controversy and despite a missing release in Karnataka due to the Kannada controversy, the Thug Life has been roaring at the box office. Mani Ratnam’s directorial has collected Rs 3 crore and will soon cross the Rs 20 crore mark. The day 2 collections of Thug Life were significantly low and failed to surpass the Suriya starrer Retro, which earned Rs 7 crore on its second day. Fans are on cloud nine after Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam collaborated after nearly four decades, following the release of Nayakan.
As per reports, a large group of audiences in Tamil gathered to watch Thug Life. The occupancy rates were higher on its opening day including above 50% in morning shows and 62% in evening shows. In Pondicherry, 57 screens were screening Thug Life on its opening day and in Chennai it was over 1000. Talking about the overall occupancy rate in North India is lower as compared to South. On day 2, the film saw a decline in Tamil occupancy rates and in Chennai, it was around 29% by Trichy. As per reports, the day 2 box office collection of Thug Life is nearly Rs 1.6 crore and the numbers are expected to rise on the weekend. On day 1, Thug Life earned Rs 17 crore and the total collection stands at Rs 18.93 crore.
The film stars Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, T.R. Silambarasan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Mahesh Manjrekar in key roles. The music has been scored by A.R. Rahman and the film is produced by Kamal’s Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies.
The film has been receiving widespread acclaim and it is trending on social media. Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam have always managed to create magic on the big screens with their close bond. Indian 2 had raked in Rs 3.45 crores on the opening day in Karnataka.
Thug Life has not been released in Karnataka after Kamal Haasan’s alleged remarks to Kannada. His statement on the origin of the people speaking Kannada and the residents has left the entire state shocked. He has refused to apologize.
