A mother’s instinct versus the dark forces – Maa blends emotions, horror, and mythology seamlessly… Kajol delivers a knockout act… Watch it!. Frankly, Maa isn’t your typical horror flick… Yes, there are jumpscares and terrifying moments, but at its heart, it’s a gripping tale of a mother battling the paranormal. Final word? Maa is a well-crafted horror film that leaves an impact… Watch it not just for the thrills, but for Kajol’s powerhouse act that stays with you long after the end credits roll.

As much as the film tried to showcase Bengali culture and traditions, it also feels like it’s again bringing to light the kind of mumbo jumbo that’s always been doing the rounds. And that was again a disappointing factor. Having said that, certain scenes and jump scares in the movie do give you goosebumps, but unfortunately, don’t leave you impressed at a stretch to change your idea about how the film pans out.Overall, it’s a one-time watch and needs a lot more to even become a notable film from the series or the universe of Shaitaan, which was released in 2024, starring R Madhavan and Ajay Devgn in the lead roles

But the writing is bland, and there’s nothing new in the CGI (computer generated images) which is extensively used. The film itself falters in the way it keeps its first half loose, and the second half muddled. The curse of the demon and its desire to keep procreating to overrun the world versus the Kali-avatar that Ambika takes on, to embody good women vs evil men, and to celebrate the power of womanhood, needed a clearer, more gripping narrative.

Kajol’s Maa is a multi-genre experience that carefully blends mythology, horror, action and emotion with finesse. A compelling watch that holds the power to move you emotionally!

As a cinephile, it’s disheartening to realise that we are still stuck in that limbo where horror either goes full melodrama or dabbles in myth without fully committing to the psychological weight of it. However, just like in ‘Maa’, Kajol, the saviour, manages to salvage the film too, but only just about.

‘Maa’ is a pure cinematic experience that one should benefit from. The film is crips and well connected. While the makers have made room for the audience to connect the dots, they, on the other end, have done their job very well. For those who love watching pure horror films, this one is definitely for you and others, give it a try, peeps! This one won’t disappoint you.Vishal Furia’s ‘Maa’ featuring Kajol and Ronit Roy is out in theatres and rightly deserves 3.5 stars.

Filmmaker Vishal Furia made Maa an engaging affair with its solid twists and turns, along with a story which will strike a chord with the Indian audience. Apart from the director, Pushkar Singh and Sandeep Francis deserve brownie points for brilliant camera work, which transports into the haunting world and sharp editing skills. On the whole, Maa is a gripping mythological horror, which will keep you glued to the big screen.
