If you are a ’90s kid, you will know the peppy hit song, Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo. The pretty lady in this music video from the movie, Dum (2002) was Yana Gupta, a girl from Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic). Yana’s name was Jana Synkova, and she was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, to Czech parents. Her mom had a tough time raising Yana and her sister, as Yana’s parents, at a very early age, got separated. However, Yana stepped into the modelling world very young and created history with the item song, Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo. It was her debut song in Bollywood that made her an overnight sensation.
Yana was then seen in a couple of movies and then silently exited the movie industry. She has not done any Bollywood movies or dance items for years, and the big question is, where is she today, and who is Yana? Did you know that Yana was 16 when she started her career in the modelling industry? She graduated with a degree in Park Architecture and Gardening and continued to pursue her passion for modelling. She reportedly went to Japan to do modelling as she was getting good money. After she came back to India, she spent her initial years in Pune at Osho’s ashram. It was here that she met her former husband, artist, Satyakam Gupta, and in 2001 they got married.
Yana then settled in Pune with her husband and was also getting modelling-related work and ad shoot offers. She did shoot for brands such as Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret, Toyota, Honda, Sony, Limca and MTV. Yana, who is known to keep her life private, separated from Satyakam back in 2005. She had revealed that she wanted to be known as only Yana and not Yana Gupta.

Yana’s Babuji Zara Dheera Chalo item song was a blockbuster hit. She was then seen in songs like Oh What A Babe, Aa Zara and Kadhal Yaanai, to name a few. She did gain fame with dance tracks, but in an earlier interview with MidDay, she shared that she never selected to dance on a song, seeing it from an item number perspective. In her words:
“I don’t choose to do item numbers. I am a music lover, and it’s the music that turns me on. Even when I started with Babuji, I loved the song and the whole country feel that the song had. Popularity doesn’t matter to me, but what matters is my work. When compliments come my way, I don’t really know how well I’ve done. It’s the process that matters and not the end result. And once I am convinced that I have given my 100 per cent, who cares about the outcome or what people think about me?”
When Yana Gupta forgot to wear panties at an event held for kids
It was in 2010 when Yana reportedly forgot to wear her underpants at a charity function held for kids. A complaint was filed against the actress, photographer and the organiser of the event for showing obscenity under sections 292/ 293 and 294 of the IPC. Earlier, in an interview with the Times Of India, she had taken the situation in her stride and shared:
“I used to be known as an item girl. Now I will be known as a no-panty girl. I should do an ad for some underwear brand with a tag line saying: ‘I’ve got them now.”
When Yana Gupta was in a relationship with Aftab Shivdasani
It was in 2006 when Yana and Aftab met as good friends. By 2007, the family of the actor started liking Yana, but by then reportedly they had reportedly broken up. Aftab’s mom was fond of the actress, but neither Yana nor Aftab had ever confirmed dating. Reportedly, with time in the current times not much is known about where Yana is.
