Priceless things are hard to handle. So are special people. Parents may find it challenging to deal with special children, but such children often share an eternal bond of love with their parents. Bricks don’t make a home, but it is familial love that builds one. Children are born, they grow, and ultimately leave their parents. As a child leaves his parents to study or work abroad, the home grows old. But the advantage of having special children? They will never leave their parents, will stay with them forever, and will never ever let their homes grow old.

Sitaare Zameen Par (2025): Starring Aamir Khan as basketball coach Gulshan Arora and Genelia Deshmukh as his wife, Sunita
Bollywood sends an emotional message to the audience with the theatrical release of a sports comedy film titled “Sitaare Zameen Par”, translated as “Stars on Earth”, on June 20, 2025. This is a Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish sports comedy “Champions”. Producer Aamir Khan features as the lead, and the film has been directed by R.S. Prasanna. It is a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan’s 2007 drama “Taare Zameen Par”.
Sitaare Zameen Par (2025) Synopsis:
A temperamental and brash basketball coach (Aamir Khan) is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and hitting a police van. As punishment, the court sends him to a community service center to train a group of neurodivergent adults. His challenge is to train these adults to make them win an upcoming basketball tournament. His outlook towards the intellectually disabled changes as he spends time with these people, training them for the tournament.

The Good:

The intellectually disabled basketball team of “Sitaares” with their coach (Aamir Khan: Center)
The complete title of this film is “Sitaare Zameen Par: Sabka Apna Apna Normal”. It delivers a strong message to the audience concerning people with neurological conditions, ADHD, and autism. “Sabka Apna Apna Normal” means “Every person on this planet is unique and has their own normal nature”. Children with intellectual disabilities must not be addressed as “abnormal”, but people need to see them as “normal” in their own world.
People with intellectual disabilities hold no feelings of greed, jealousy, competitiveness, or hatred towards one another. The climax showed the autistic basketball team of “Sitaares” losing in the end to their rival autistic team in the final match. We were actually expecting that they would win the tournament. But No! They lost it! However, to the amazement of their coach (Aamir Khan), both the rival teams of autistic people were shown dancing and celebrating their victory.

When the coach asked his team members to calm down and tried to make them understand that they have actually lost the tournament, one of them replied, “No sir, we have won. My mother told me that the number two is always greater than number one which means second is always better than the first. That’s why we all are celebrating”. At this, the coach’s eyes filled with tears as he told his wife (Genelia Deshmukh) that, “We try to teach these intellectually disabled people how to behave in this world. But in fact, we are the ones who need to learn from them, the term known as humanity”.

The screenplay is engaging and has comical punches all the time. Amusing punches are frequently thrown at Aamir Khan’s short stature as a basketball coach. The screenplay is lively with ongoing basketball practices and matches, informative about intellectually disabled people, and laden with deep emotions at the same time, which makes it interesting. Genelia Deshmukh as Aamir’s on-screen wife lends great support to him as well as his basketball team, although her role is considerably short. The actors in the roles of intellectually disabled basketball players gave stellar comical performances. After watching them, I wondered if the makers had used real intellectually disabled people in this movie. However, it was not so. They were just actors who stupendously lived up to their respective characters.
Moreover, the visuals give the screenplay a childish and jolly essence as if we are watching a group of kids instead of intellectually disabled adults. There aren’t any sloppy moments during the movie’s screen time, and the entire 2 hours and 30 minutes will be worth the money you will spend.

The Bad:

Behind the scenes: Aamir Khan (Right) on the sets of Sitaare Zameen Par
There happens to be negative stereotyping of women in some scenes. A dialogue from Sitaare Zameen Par goes where one autistic person indicates the other and tells the coach, “His girlfriend is a pr**titute”. At this, the coach silences him, telling him that “pr**titute” is an improper word and the term “businesswoman” should be used instead. The autistic guy then asks the coach, “What does your wife do?” to which he replies, “She is a businesswoman”. At this, the autistic guy screams at the coach, “His girlfriend is a businesswoman just like your wife”. This scene was shown hilariously. The audience laughed, but if you look at it deeply, this phrase is terribly misogynistic.
Another negative aspect of this movie is that, in spite of being entertaining, this film happens to be a direct copy of the 2018 Spanish sports comedy “Champions”, which is based on a true story. So, for those who have already watched the English or Hindi dubbed versions of that Spanish movie, the story may appear predictable, repetitive, and boring. But not the emotions! I must tell you, Hindi cinema has its own unique emotional factor, which is lacking in international movies.

The Verdict: Comical, Yet Emotional!
It was unbelievable to witness how a group of autistic individuals completely transformed their hot-headed and adamant basketball coach into a compassionate human being. Sitaare Zameen Par is not a movie for action or suspense lovers. This lighthearted, comical, and emotional sports drama is for those who suffer from neurodegenerative disorders or have had encounters with intellectually disabled people. Only they will understand the emotions associated with this movie.
I do not usually praise remakes. I don’t know if I am being delusional or exaggerating Sitaare Zameen Par to be a fantastic movie. The fact is that, unlike the rest of the audience, I can feel the emotions in this film concerning intellectually disabled people. If you ask me, why? The matter is completely personal! To be honest, in real life, you can imagine my situation to be similar to Aamir Khan in the movie. That’s the reason, after watching this film, I was literally in tears as the protagonist himself.
