On the whole, Sitaare Zameen Par is a surefire super-hit. It may have started slow but its word of mouth will be so strong that its collections will pick up phenomenally. The film will have a long run at the box-office and may get standing ovation in the initial days at a number of places. Cinemas will see demand for genuine block bookings from large groups. Cinemas will also witness footfalls from audience who haven’t seen films on the big screen since years.

Unlike Ram Shankar Nikumbh of Taare Zameen Par, his coach here is not easy to root for at the outset. But Gulshan’s honesty becomes more apparent with his willingness to learn and grow.By the time the film wraps up, one wishes there was more to this feel-good exercise that never reaches the dramatic heights it is aiming for.

That is how it would have remained had the remarkable sitaare of this film not descended in our midst and demonstrated that there is much more to acting than what we are accustomed to. Sitaare Zameen Par is a rousing slam dunk because it has its heart in the right place.

In all, his film lacks nuance; his acting turn is obvious and one-note, leaving no room for subtext. Aamir is screaming inclusion in every scene, but the sermon’s too loud and the script too soft. A little less halo, a little more honesty would’ve gone a long way.

Sitaare’ is a near-reprisal, but also a neat flip, in the way the teacher becomes the taught. Which is not to say that ‘Sitaare’ doesn’t have flaws. In some parts, the explanations become a bit stage-y, even though Gurpal Singh’s character brings a lovely restrained emotional core to the man who runs the remedial centre; in other bits, the humour is heavy-handed. Occasionally, the film flattens.

It doesn’t rely on cheap laughs, nor does it belittle anyone to make a point.You don’t need any preparation to watch this film – it comes easily to you. One moment you are seated, and the next, you are rolling down in laughter. The humour is its USP; the performances are its soul.Aamir Khan returns with a tickling feather and a promise: a story for all ages, all kinds, and all shades of normal. Divy Nidhi Sharma, the writer of Sitaare Zameen Par, does a fabulous job at presenting the Indian version of Campeones. The screenplay is engaging, crisp, clean and entertaining. The pace is slower in the first half, Sitaare Zameen Par picks up in the second hour, leaving no scope for boredom to kick in. Every character is celebrated and fears are turned into celebration. A lift sequence that adds a new subplot to the story is executed brilliantly. Aamir Khan in a timeless comedy, but without leaving his zone, is a treat.

Having said that, you could give Sitaare Zameen Par a shot. Reasons? It’s a celebration of neurodiversity, makes a strong statement about inclusivity, breaks down stigmas surrounding it, and makes you think about what ‘the other kind of normal’ is. It comes as a gush of fresh wind at a time when actioners and jingoistic dramas have become the order of the day. Plus, Aamir has no plans of releasing it on any streaming platform.

The movie doesn’t pierce your soul, the way Taare Zameen Par did_._ Maybe the concept was new then, doing films with a social issue, hence it was completely lapped up by the audiences. This time the audience has evolved and our taste buds are also refined, we have seen several films on inclusivity, hence it doesn’t shake us the way Taare Zameen Par did. Having said that, by not completely running down the efforts of the makers, Sitaare Zameen Par is definitely worth your time though cinematically, it shines only sporadically.
