When will Akshay Kumar join 30 crore opening club?
Akshay Kumar is still attempting to make his entry into the 30 crore nett opening club, and he remains the only 90s superstar absent from the list. Amongst his contemporaries, Shah Rukh Khan has hit a 60 crore nett opening with Jawan (2023) and a 55 crore nett opening with Pathaan (2023); Aamir Khan achieved 49 crore with Thugs of Hindostan (2018); Salman Khan has hit 40 crore with Bharat (2019) and Tiger 3 (2023); Ajay Devgn reached 40 crore with Singham Again and 30 crore with Singham Returns (2015) and Golmaal Again (2017). If we add 2000s superstar Hrithik Roshan, then he has a 50 crore nett opening with War (2019). When will Akshay join these huge opening clubs, and what actually went wrong? Here’s our detailed take.
Akshay’s biggest opening to date is Mission Mangal (2019), which went on to collect 28.45 crore nett in a clash, and it’s a big total for any movie in this genre. In short, it overperformed. He missed the 30 crore mark then. His biggest release after that was Sooryavanshi (2021), which came after the pandemic and collected a little over 26 crore nett. This cop-universe flick was his sure-shot bet for a 30 crore nett opening and even a 35 crore nett opening if it had released before the pandemic. The restricted release and pandemic effects stopped Kumar from joining the 30 crore club again. After this, there are no excuses, as his script sense went terribly wrong with commercial movies, and the number of footfalls kept decreasing for his films.
He attempted masala and action films like Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which were released on a wide scale with the capacity for a 40 crore nett opening (unlike Sooryavanshi), but all of them failed to touch even half of the 30 crore nett mark. His latest flick, Housefull 5, received a wide release in approximately 5,025 screens in India, and yet the opening was just 22 crore nett. This number should have been 30 crore nett plus if Akki had been in the same flow as he was in 2019.

It will take some time for him to regain the lost faith, but if Housefull 5, with its franchise value, 5,025 screens, and high budget, failed to make 25 crore nett, then it’s difficult for the star to achieve higher figures with other films. He may need another masala blockbuster like Rowdy Rathore (2012), which remains his only blockbuster in this millennium.
From his upcoming slate, Jolly LLB 3 looks promising since it merges Jolly 1 and Jolly 2 and will certainly take a good opening. However, the question is, will it cross 30 crore nett? It depends on the release date, size, and, most importantly, the pre-release buzz, which was against Housefull 5. Welcome 3 is another biggie, but again, a lot depends on the kind of product they have created and it must get a solo release. Bhooth Bangla doesn’t seem to be that kind of commercial biggie as far as the opening is concerned, but it can perform better in the long run if Priyadarshan returns to his old form from the 2000-2007 era.

Akshay’s best bet would be the horror universe film with Maddock, which can achieve a huge opening, considering the 53 crore nett opening of Stree 2, where he had a cameo appearance, so it will be directly linked to his character as the main villain in Mahayudh. By that time, a 30 crore nett would have the value of 35-40 crore nett. Therefore, if not 30 crore, he can directly enter the 35 crore, 40 crore, or even 50 crore nett opening clubs, all at once.
