Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, during his recent speech at the state’s assembly, claimed that a boatman family became multi-millionaire during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. The family owns 130 boats.
In the viral video, the CM of the state stated,
Mai ek naavik parivaar ki success story bata raha hu. Ek naavik parivaar jinke paas ek sau tees rupaye (Rs 130), hai! Paintaalis dino ke avadhi mein in logo ne shuddh bachat ki hai tees karod rupaye! (Let me narrate to you the success story of a ferryman family. Within 45 days, the boatman family’s savings went from a meagre Rs 130 to Rs 30 crore!)

The Maha Kumbh 2025 was held at the Triveni Sangam in UP’s Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad). The religious event, often dubbed “the largest peaceful gathering of humans on Earth,” commenced on January 13. It culminated on 26th February on the Maha Shiv Ratri festival. Per state data, over 66 crore or 660 million devotees flocked to take holy dip. The revenue generated during the maha kumbh is estimated at Rs 2 trillion or $23 billion.
Reactions poured in over the success story shared by the UP CM. One user took potshots at the government, “Profit of 23 lakhs per boat. This is outrageous. It means that they have looted people there. The government was supporting these looters.” Another user jibed, “One boatman earns 23 lakhs in 45 days, and you ignorant middle-class are wasting 12 hours a day at Infosys for the same 23 lakh in a whole year.” “Nirmala Tai’s watching,” wrote one, while another remarked that it was all “money laundering.” Others dropped memes.
