Prateik Babbar and Priya Banerjee tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony that was held on February 14, 2025. In a recent interview, Prateik explained why the ceremony was attended by closest family and friends, but not her father, veteran actor Raj Babbar.
Actor Prateik Smita Patil married girlfriend Priya Banerjee earlier this year. But what grabbed everyone’s attention was Prateik’s decision to not invite his father, veteran actor Raj Babbar, and siblings Aarya Babbar and Juhi Babbar to the wedding ceremony. During a recent chat, Prateik revealed the real reason for Raj’s absence.
During a recent interaction, Prateik explained that because the wedding was organised at his late mother Smita Patil’s residence, it was ‘unethical’ to send out the invite to his father’s family. Reason? The complex dynamics between Raj Babbar’s wife, Nadira, and Smita Patil.
Prateik was speaking to Times Now when he revealed, “My father’s wife and my mother had some complications in the past, lots of things have been said in the press and stuff like that if you dig out 38-40 years ago. I was open to doing something with my father and his family for another function. I just thought it was unethical to have him and his family at that house when after everything had went on between them. Absolutely, it wasn’t right.”
Prateik also laid emphasis on the fact that he decided to not invite his father to honour his mother. “I’m sorry my father and his wife could not be there, could not be in the house my mother bought for me to grow up and live a life as a single mother. She wanted to live in that house with me as a single mother. Bring me up. I’m sorry. That was the best decision my wife and I made.” He added, “It wasn’t about rejecting anyone. It was about respecting my mother and her wishes.”
Raj Babbar fell for Smita Patil while filming 1982 movie Beehgi Palkein. He was already married to Nadira Babbar and had two children, Aarya and Juhi. However, he decided to leave Nadira and marry Smita secretly. In November 1986, they were blessed with Prateik. But Smita Patil passed away due to complications following childbirth. Following her demise, Raj Babbar reconciled with Nadira.
The popular actor also shared his views on the reactions from Raj Babbar and his children after they learnt about his wedding. “People are impulsive, people make impulsive choices and say things out of impulse and it was just distasteful and I think that bitter taste has remained. That bitter taste has remained,” he explained.
