Punjabi pop singer Diljit Dosanjh is back on our screens after delivering non-stop musical hits, this time with his new film, Detective Shergill. However, fans have mixed reactions about this new comedy-thriller from the popular Punjabi singer.
This isn’t the first time Diljit has shown off his immaculate acting skills; we’ve seen it firsthand in Bollywood movies like Phillauri, Soorma, and Netflix’s Amar Singh Chamkila. Diljit proves time and again that his creativity isn’t just limited to his musical talent but also extends to his acting. The film, directed by Ravi Chhabriya and produced by Rohini Singh, Manmeet Singh, Ali Abbas Zafar, and Himanshu Mehra, follows the story of a non-serious and fun-loving amateur detective who takes on a high-profile murder case involving a billionaire businessman. However, as the initial investigation points to the possibility of a contract killing and a hate crime, Detective Shergill, played by Diljit Dosanjh himself, thinks something is off with the businessman’s family instead and suspects foul play within the kin. Adamant on solving this case in his own way, Detective Shergill dives deeper into this murder investigation and uncovers hidden motives and buried family secrets in a blend of mystery and comedy.
The film absolutely fits the comedy-thriller genre as it never fails to make the audience burst out with laughter while still managing to create suspense around the investigation’s result. A netizen took to the popular social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote about the film’s “overstretched climax.” They wrote, “With a blatant #KnivesOut hangover, and an overstretched half-hour climax, #DetectiveSherdil, on @ZEE5India, is a murder mystery that tests your patience and your brain cells. It has its good moments, but the bad writing leaves this film hobbling through long stretches.” In contrast, another netizen took to X and praised Diljit Dosanjh’s acting and performance, writing, “Acting and performance peaking movie after movie….
