TL;DR

This Mediterranean influenced herb and garlic seasoning doesn’t include salt because you don’t need salt in a seasoning blend. Salt can always be added and adjusted in a dish at a later time.

I don’t know why seasoning blends are made and sold with salt these days. This only makes sense if it’s a rub, in my opinion.

Salt-free means, this herb and garlic blend contains less sodium, which in turn can be beneficial if your doctor asked you to follow a sodium-low diet.

Ingredient Notes

  • Garlic Powder — Regular garlic power or toasted garlic powder, the choice is all yours.
  • Oregano Dried — A good quality oregano makes all the difference.
  • Marjoram Dried — A herb cousin of the oregano. Marjoram is super popular in Europe, it’s a staple in every kitchen.
  • Thyme Dried — Thyme will make this seasoning blend unforgettable, delicious.
  • Rosemary Dried and Ground — Needs to be ground so to blend into the mix. I recommend purchasing packed ground dried rosemary instead of doing it yourself, as it’s tedious. If you have time and patience, dry your rosemary, toast the needles briefly in a pan, let them cool and grind them fine in a coffee grinder or small jar blender.
  • Basil Dried — Get Italian basil and not some Asian basil variety by accident (because that happened to me once).

Serving

I love to sprinkle some of this garlic herb over vegetables with some olive oil before I pop them into the oven. Or use it as a mash potato or turnip mash seasoning.

You can use it as a seasoning, with additional salt, as a rub for chicken, turkey breasts, lamb, or beef. The same can be done with fish such as cod, tilapia and pan fried trout filet.

I like to season my homemade fish sticks or nuggets with this garlic and herb seasoning.

Or try mixing it into your homemade croutons to prepare herb garlic crouton. Prepare easy flavored last-minute herb butter to slather over your bread to make garlic herb flavored bread.

Storing

The seasoning is good for a few months stored in a jar. use glass jars with a quality seal so that the herbs are airtight, away from humidity.

Herbs and the ground garlic can lose on oomph in time. Spice and herb blends in general don’t really have an expiration date, but mold can grow in a jar if left in the open in a humid, hot climate.

I also recommend keeping the herb blend away from direct sunlight on a shelf where you see it and not at the back of your pantry cupboard.
