Plus an astro-tarot forecast, resources, and an exploration of the Sabian symbol for the new moon in Capricorn

The December 2024 new moon falls in the sign of Capricorn; this is the second new moon this month, making it a Black Moon. This rare astronomical phenomenon occurs when there are two new moons in the same month, and generally indicates a time of significant change and transformation.
Symbolized by the mountain goat, which maintains perfect balance while it climbs over precarious rock ledges, the Capricorn archetype is one of disciplined and dogged determination towards the attainment of our worldly desires.
Spiritually, the Capricorn archetype teaches us about integrity and helps us to harness the ability to plan our work, and stick to it, no matter what. In these times of 24×7 consumption culture, it’s easy to be addicted with shiny object syndrome and forget about our goals and plans. Capricorn teaches us about the meaning of integrity: to align ourselves with our highest ideals and actualize our potential.
This new moon also highlights our sense of self-worth and self-esteem, which are intrinsically tied to our finances, our emotions, and the things we value. This is an especially good time to contemplate the value that we place on our own resources and to consider our consumption patterns.
Do things tend to jump into your shopping cart and arrive at your doorstep, or are you generally more mindful of your purchases? Take an inventory of your possessions — especially the things you gravitate towards buying. Is it perhaps time to shop your own shelves, so to speak, to perhaps consider a low-buy year?
Also take an inventory of who you spend your time with and how you spend your time. Are you utilizing your time well? Focusing on the activities and projects that matter to you? Are the people in your life generative, by which I mean do you look forward to meeting them, to spending time with them? Or do your interactions leave you drained and feeling like you wasted your time? This is a good time to cut out interactions and activities that don’t feel life giving, and consider ways in which you can make space to do more of the things and meet more of the people who feel generative.
Astro-tarot influences for the Capricorn new moon
To throw some more light on the December 2024 new moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Capricorn new moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the Two of Pentacles. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Devil, which is associated with Capricorn.

The Daily Pause Oracle
A beautifully designed 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, give you a word or an idea to reflect on as you go about your day. Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing. There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.
I think these cards mirror the themes above beautifully, giving us clues and advice when it comes to navigating these questions and getting clear on what truly matters to us…what we value…what and who we hold dear. These are excellent questions to consider at any time of the year, but even more so now, while we stand at the threshold between years.
All our choices, be they a matter of how we spend our time or resources, require us to juggle and balance a number of different priorities and commitments. The nuts and bolts of planning how we spend our free time or the way in which we budget and allocate resources determines how fulfilled we feel in any given moment.
Simply put, the more mindfully we spend our time, the more fulfilled we feel. Spending our time mindfully requires us to first be clear on what we value, on what is important to us. And that involves some sort of planning. It can be as simple as carving out some time to list out the projects and activities that we would like to prioritize, chunking them into months or quarters and then putting them into our schedules.
For Type A folks, this could be a matter of blocking time out in your planners and sticking to a set schedule. If you like more spaciousness and flexibility in your days, consider picking projects that you will focus on each month, and then working them into your daily rhythm.
No matter what your personality type is, without some sort of structure, it’s easy to fall into the clutches of addiction: too much time on social media or binge watching Netflix, for example. Neither of these are necessarily bad — sometimes, we simply need an escape. But without a plan, it’s easier to default into addictive behaviors, lose track of time, and then feel like we’ve frittered our day away.
Mindful consumption is another of the themes that this new moon is highlighting, and one that I think is of exceeding importance, especially when we consider issues such as depleting natural resources, waste dumps leaching into the soil and floating islands of waste in the oceans, and the ever present threat of climate change. Not to mention our often overfilled homes and growing credit card debt.
This would be a good time to unsubscribe from marketing e-mails, newsletters that no longer align with your values, or those that provoke comparison and low-key anxiety. It’s also a good idea to take an inventory of sorts of your possessions and see if you can ‘shop your shelves’ instead of adding to your cart.
With Saturn lending its penchant for discipline and structure and Pallas heightening our wisdom, strategy, and creative problem solving abilities, this final new moon of 2024 can help us set some solid structures, plans, and boundaries as we head into the new year.

This is a beautiful symbol of connection between humans and animals, and speaks to our deeper connection with all the living things in this beautiful world of ours.
According to Linda Hill, this degree shows the overcoming of fears, superstitions and limiting thoughts and patterns, through gentleness, kindness, and a readiness to let down your walls.
In 360 Degrees of Wisdom: The Sabian Oracle, Linda Hill writes, “Trusting in the goodness of people and other living beings — rather than projecting negative thoughts and connotations onto them — can lead to experiences that few have. There can be a reward, tangible or otherwise, in calling all kinds of animals and people to you in the endeavor to have some kind of exchange or communication. You may end up helping each other in some way.”
This symbol is also a gentle invitation to overcome the fears that prevent you from communicating with others, often through spontaneous acts of kindness and gentleness. Linda Hill reminds us that “Extending a hand to others without concern for the consequences can lead to fear and alienation being overcome. It often just takes the simple act of reaching out.”
Though it can be scary to reach out to people, sometimes, largely due to a fear of failure or hearing “no”, you will never know what is possible unless you take the leap and ask for what you want, with kindness and a spirit of collaboration and sharing.
