As the cliche statement goes, “Hyderabad is a melting pot of cultures.” That’s very true, as people from different parts of India live in Hyderabad. This also leads to the availability of a variety of food in Hyderabad. In this post, I will share my experience dining at Oye Kake in Hyderabad a few weeks ago
As I have said in the past as well, it’s not impossible to find vegetarian food in Hyderabad. If you’re a vegetarian in Hyderabad, you should read my vegetarian restaurants in Hyderabad post – I try to keep it up to date.
I was out with my friends and dining here. While my first visit wasn’t a success because there was a 45-minute wait for lunch, this time around, I reserved my table a few days in advance and easily got a table.
Touch of Punjab in HiTec City
Oye Kake is a recent addition to Knowledge Sattva‘s growing dining scene. It shares space with popular restaurants like Tevar, Kembara, and Simply South.
While compact, the restaurant can comfortably accommodate 50-80 diners. The interiors transport you to a traditional Punjabi village, with thoughtfully placed earthen pots, rustic cookware, and warm colours adorning the walls.
The carefully curated Punjabi music playlist enhances the authentic atmosphere, making the dining experience more immersive. Though the seating area is well-designed, I found the tables slightly lower than usual (this could be only me), which might affect comfort during longer meals. They also offer outdoor seating, but we opted for the indoor section during our group dinner to better enjoy the ambience.
Punjab on a Plate – Oye Kake Food Review
We took our time to identify things that we wanted to order. Eventually, we ordered Balochi Aloo, Pani Puri, Bun Samosa, and Amristari Pyaaz Kulcha. The Balochi Aloo surprised with its unique tandoor-cooked marinade on baby potatoes. Their Pani Puri stood out with well-balanced meetha and teekha pani. The North Indian street favourite Bun Samosa was delivered with its combination of crushed samosa and spicy-sweet chutneys between buns. Lastly, the Amritsari Pyaaz Kulcha came generously stuffed, though the accompanying chole, while good, closely missed the authentic Amritsari touch in the chole.
For mains, we decided to go with the seasonal Sarson ka Saag with Makke ki Roti. It was competently executed – among the better versions available in Hyderabad. The Dal Makhni was impressive with its creamy texture and rich flavours. The bread basket of Garlic Naan and rotis complemented the mains well. We also wanted to try some subzi, but we were already full, hence avoided it. In fact, we had to parcel all of this as well.
While we were already full, we surely did have some space for desserts. While I wanted to try the Phirni and Lassi, collectively, we decided to go with Cutting Lassi. This innovative Cutting Lassi sampler offered six variations – plain, strawberry, rose, kesar, coffee, and dry fruit. If you’ve been to Roast CCX, they also have a cold brew sampler. The traditional plain lassi, along with strawberry and kesar variants, stood out, while the coffee version fell short. The variety pack serves as an ideal way to explore their lassi selection, and if you have the space, order the full-sized lassi!
Overall, the food we tried was good and the flavours were on point. I’m surely going back with my parents to try other vegetarian dishes that they serve.
Wrapping Up: Price, Service & Overall Experience
Oye Kake brings authentic Punjabi flavours to Hyderabad’s bustling IT corridor. The restaurant’s village-inspired decor and carefully curated playlist create an immersive dining experience. While the food impresses with dishes like Dal Makhni and their innovative Cutting Lassi sampler, the service needs improvement – we often had to follow up for basics like water and menus.
At ₹3,097 for three people, it offers good value considering its prime location, ambience, and food quality. For vegetarians seeking North Indian cuisine in Hitech City, Oye Kake deserves a spot on your must-visit list despite its service hiccups—which I’m sure will improve over time.
