Galaxy Watch 4 – How It Transformed My Fitness – 6 Months and 2.5 Million Steps!


Back in 2020, when COVID-19 hit and lockdowns became our reality, I decided to take control of my health. I have always been on the heavier side since school. Hence, I had to take care of things, and working from home meant I had more time. What started as a simple goal became an incredible journey of losing 25 kg and getting a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 later!

My trusty MiFit band was there through it all – well, multiple MiFit bands, actually, since they had an annoying habit of falling off my wrist without warning! After losing my fourth band, I knew it was time for an upgrade. 

Enter the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. 6 months and 2.5 million steps later, this watch has become more than just a fitness tracker – it’s my daily companion. In this post, I’ll share my honest experience with the Watch 4 and how it’s helping me stay committed to my fitness goals.

My Fitness Journey

The most difficult part of a fitness journey is maintaining it. While I lost weight, I kept derailing from my fitness routine due to travel, weddings, etc. But what that 4-month journey did to me during COVID was it wired me into eating healthy and being relatively active. 

Hence, when I got my Galaxy Watch 4, I returned to my walking habit. Six months ago, I would’ve laughed if you’d told me I’d consistently walk 5.5 kilometres daily. But here we are, 2.5 million steps later! The Galaxy Watch 4 turned my casual strolls into a proper fitness routine, and honestly? It wasn’t even that hard.

The watch’s constant presence on my wrist reminds me to stay active. What keeps me going is watching those step counts climb day after day. There’s something incredibly satisfying about ending each day knowing you’ve hit your 10K step goal. Unlike my previous fitness tracking attempts with MiFit bands (RIP to the four I lost), every step gets counted accurately. No more missing data or mysterious gaps in my fitness journey!

Standout Features I Love About the Galaxy Watch4

From being the one who would never buy a smartwatch to buying one, I never thought I’d be here, writing about Galaxy Watch 4. This watch is special; it’s way more than just a step counter. So, in this section, let me geek out about the features of the Galaxy Watch4.

First up, notifications. Being able to check messages on my wrist during work, my walks, or any time means I don’t have to dig out my phone every few minutes or reach for it, which may be in another room. I’m a morning person; waking up early was never a problem. But I still use the alarm feature and have one set. I also use the countdown timer a lot. 

This watch also has a built-in blood pressure monitor and an ECG. I have a BP machine at home, and I was initially sceptical, but the Watch 4’s readings are almost accurate! I’ve compared them side by side multiple times, and they’re consistently close.

Automatic workout detection deserves special mention. I no longer have to frantically try to start tracking my workouts like with my old bands—the watch knows when I’m walking, running, or even doing other exercises. Apart from the fitness tracker, sleep tracking has been eye-opening, too. Finding out I get more deep sleep when I hit my step goal has motivated me to keep moving. My sleep score is on the lower side; I get around 6 hours of sleep, and I know I need to improve. 

The smartwatch has WiFi, Bluetooth, and an e-sim with  LTE on the networking front.  Having LTE means leaving my phone at home during walks and staying connected. So even if my watch isn’t connected to the phone, I can get notifications and SMSes. It was easy to set up a plan for this using the Airtel app.

Lastly, a small yet very amazing feature that I use is the flashlight. Especially when I need some light and I don’t have a flashlight or my phone, the flashlight on the watch is very helpful.

Galaxy Watch 4 – Room From Improvement

The Galaxy Watch 4 isn’t perfect. Battery life is the elephant in the room. If you’re using features like LTE, GPS, and continuous health monitoring, you’re looking at charging every day or two. Remember those fitness bands that lasted a week? Yeah, this isn’t that. I’ve gotten into a routine of charging it while I get ready in the morning, but forget to do that, and you might find yourself with a fancy bracelet by evening.

Then, there’s the charger situation. In 2025, when practically everything uses Type-C, this watch still comes with an older USB port. It means carrying an extra cable when travelling, and if you forget it, you’re out of luck because your phone charger won’t work. 

Small things add up to minor frustrations in an otherwise excellent device. But the good thing is that I can wirelessly charge this using my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s wireless charging capability. Not that I use it regularly, but it can come in handy when needed. 

Galaxy Watch 4 Isn’t Just A Watch

As I wrap up this review, I’m literally glancing at my Watch 4 to check today’s step count – old habits die hard! What started as a simple upgrade from repeatedly lost fitness bands has turned into one of my best tech investments. Yes, I have to charge it more often than I’d like, and that old USB port makes me roll my eyes occasionally, but these are small prices to pay for something that’s become such an integral part of my fitness journey.

The numbers tell part of the story – 2.5 million steps, consistent 5.5km daily walks, and accurate health monitoring. But the real value lies in how seamlessly it’s helped me maintain healthy habits. If you’re considering switching from a basic fitness band to a smartwatch, and you’re willing to trade some battery life for much more functionality, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic won’t disappoint.
