In Xanadu: A Quest by William Dalrymple
I came across this mesmerizing travelogue—In Xanadu: A Quest, by William Dalrymple, many moons ago, in an airport bookshop, and was so tempted by the blurb that I picked it up even though I already had enough on my TBR list!
I have to tell you that I never regretted that impulsive decision one bit—because, as it happened, alongside my own travel, I joined another thrilling adventure along the ancient Silk Road, retracing the footsteps of Marco Polo, the 13th-century Venetian explorer. The journey from Jerusalem to Xanadu in Inner Mongolia, China, turned out to be a masterful blend of travel adventure, historical exploration and cultural discovery, thanks to the author, William Dalrymple who conveys the sheer sense of wonder and excitement that comes from traveling across the world when you’re just 22. Yup, that’s how old our author was, when he wrote this book!
Through a complex web of cultures and landscapes, Dalrymple’s sense of adventure and curiosity makes the journey as much about personal discovery as historical exploration. The book is a testament to his storytelling prowess, as he weaves together vivid descriptions of the people, places, and experiences he encounters along the way.
One of the highlights of the book is his rich exploration of the historical and cultural significance of the Silk Road. He provides insightful commentary on the trade routes that connected Europe and Asia, the exchange of goods and ideas, and the impact of cultural interactions on societies along the Silk Road. It is evident that there was a lot of research into Marco Polo’s travels, which added the necessary depth and context to his narrative, offering fascinating comparisons between the medieval and contemporary landscapes.
The stories of the author’s adventures with the locals were a joy to read, offering intimate glimpses into their lives, beliefs, and histories. From bustling markets in Istanbul to remote villages in Central Asia, one can feel the vibrancy and complexity of the Silk Road civilizations. The narrative is very generously laced with humor and wit, adding a human touch to the story, making it alluring to the readers.
Throughout the book, Dalrymple makes interesting observations on cultural quirks, language barriers, and unexpected situations, inviting the readers to contemplate their own journeys of discovery—both literal and metaphorical.
The book, a classic in its genre—is a veritable treasure trove of historical insights, cultural observations, and personal anecdotes, making it accessible to both travel enthusiasts and history buffs.
Do read this book if you, like me, are interested in history, travel or culture because you’ll be glad that you can enjoy the book, without having to go on this journey. The other reason to read it is because one doesn’t come across a travelogue like this very often, that can be both scholarly and funny at the same time!
I have to say that, as a travel buff, I thoroughly loved it.
