A 25-year-old engineering graduate, Sharath, was arrested by Tumakuru police for stealing women’s innerwear from female students in his neighbourhood.
The incident took place in IV Cross, SIT, Tumakuru, where girl students living in a rented house noticed their innerwear going missing. Concerned, they informed their building owner, who then reported the matter to the police on Friday.
CCTV footage revealed Sharath stopping his two-wheeler near the students’ house and stealing the innerwear. When questioned, he admitted to stealing from multiple areas, including SIT, SS Puram, and Ashoknagar. Police stated that Sharat was addicted to watching adult films.
Sharath, a resident of Chikkanayakanahalli in Tumakuru district, Karnataka comes from a well-educated family. His parents are teachers, and his elder brother is an engineer. However, his family was completely unaware of his actions until the police informed them.
Sharath was later released on bail with a warning not to repeat such behaviour. According to a senior police officer, the female students chose not to file a formal complaint or give a witness statement. During questioning, Sharath admitted that he stole the innerwear while returning home after swimming.
Pornography laws in India
In India, watching and sharing pornographic content is strictly controlled by law. Selling or distributing porn is illegal under Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, watching it in private is not considered a crime. Child pornography, on the other hand, is completely banned under Section 67B of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000.
Anyone caught selling, sharing, or showing obscene material can face jail time and fines under IPC Section 292. Section 67B of the IT Act makes it a serious crime to create, share, or keep child pornography.
Even though these laws exist, many people still access porn online due to difficulties in enforcing the ban. Some use VPNs to bypass restrictions. The main laws related to this issue are IPC Section 292, which bans selling and sharing obscene content, and IT Act Section 67B, which strictly bans child pornography.
