Davangere police arrested five persons on the charge of assaulting a woman in public. The alleged assault took place on April 9 in Tavarkere village in Davangere district of Karnataka.

Multiple videos of a group of men assaulting and harassing a burkha-clad woman in a street corner were shared on social media on April 14 and 15. They assault her with sticks and rubber pipes. They were accusing her of engaging in an extra-marital affair and were using abusive words.

Police traced the woman and learnt that the attackers were her relatives. She filed a complaint, which led to the arrest of the accused.

The first information report lists charges of intimidation, insult, assault and attempt to murder against Mohammad Nayaz, Mohammad Ghouse, Mohammad Rasool, Inayat Ullah and Chand Pasha. They have been remanded in judicial custody.

On April 15, Superintendent of Police Uma Prashant told reporters in Davangere that an investigation is underway.
