Hailee Steinfeld Opens Up About Sensitive Skin During Sinners Filming
Hailee Steinfeld’s experience filming her upcoming vampire flick, Sinners, wasn’t all smooth sailing – especially when it came to her sensitive skin. The 28-year-old actress opened up about how being drenched in fake blood caused her skin to break out during the filming process. In a Beau Society newsletter published on March 31, Steinfeld shared how the sticky blood affected her skin and overall comfort on set.
“I did break out a bit,” Steinfeld confessed, noting her skin is super sensitive. “The only thing I can really compare it to is being covered in mud, which is also gross, or water, which is tough because no one wants to be soaking wet in denim for hours on end,” she explained. Despite the blood being vegan and made from safe ingredients, it still left her with skin issues.
Steinfeld didn’t shy away from describing the experience as “not great.” “It’s sticky, SO sticky,” she said. “Parts of my body were glued to each other. Moving, and like unsticking, was kind of painful.” This isn’t the first time Steinfeld has faced uncomfortable situations on set, as her first feature film, True Grit (2010), helped prepare her for the tough filming conditions, but being covered in blood still left her feeling unsettled.
For Steinfeld, the discomfort of being covered in fake blood, despite its harmless ingredients, brought a certain level of realism to her performance. “When you have something you feel the weight of on your body – blood, soaking wet denim – it impacts your performance,” she said. It’s a part of the process that, while unpleasant, played a role in bringing her character to life in a meaningful way.
The experience wasn’t all bad, though. Steinfeld noted that even though the blood wasn’t the most pleasant thing to deal with, it added to the intensity of the scenes. “Even just walking around the set and seeing castmates, friends covered in blood, was intense and at times really terrifying, especially considering the storyline,” she said.
Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, is set to hit theaters on April 18, and Steinfeld’s role is sure to captivate fans. She stars alongside Michael B. Jordan, Jack O’Connell, and other big names in the horror film. The movie’s plot centers around twin brothers, played by Jordan, who return to their hometown, only to discover that a greater evil awaits them. Steinfeld’s character adds a supernatural edge to the storyline, further amplifying the eerie atmosphere of the film.
“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back,” reads the film’s synopsis.
Steinfeld, who also spoke about her Nexus campaign with PEOPLE in March, shared her excitement about working on Sinners. She explained the challenges and fun of taking on a supernatural role while keeping the character grounded. “What a learning curve to take on this supernatural element to this character, but making it feel very human and very real,” she said.
As for her time covered in blood on set, Steinfeld reflected on how it enhanced her experience, adding a unique and thrilling element to her performance. “There’s something about vampires that people love and are really drawn to,” she said. “It’s just the most incredible original story.”
