After a massive four-day search operation, police have arrested a man accused of raping a woman who was on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Medanta Hospital. The incident shocked many and led to a major investigation.
The accused has been identified as Deepak, a 25-year-old from Badhauli village in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He worked as a technician at Medanta Hospital for the last five months. According to the police, he was caught in Gurugram today.
To track him down, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed, supported by 8 skilled teams. They went through footage from nearly 800 CCTV cameras installed in and around the hospital. They also questioned hospital staff to gather information.
After the arrest, Medanta Hospital issued a statement confirming that a suspect had been identified and taken into custody. “We have suspended the employee based on information from the police,” the hospital stated. It also assured that it is fully cooperating with the investigation.
The survivor, a 46-year-old air hostess, said she was sexually assaulted on April 6 while admitted to the ICU and placed on ventilator support. She said she was too weak to defend herself and that two nurses were present during the assault but didn’t step in.
The survivor shared this with her husband after being discharged on April 13. He immediately approached the police. A case was registered the next day at the Sadar Police Station based on her complaint.
On April 15, Medanta Hospital publicly acknowledged the complaint and stated that it is cooperating with authorities.
