As the central government has called for identifying and deporting Pakistanis in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Wednesday that there were no Pakistanis in Tripura.
“At present, there are no Pakistani nationals in Tripura. But foreigners from some other countries have already moved,” Saha told reporters in Agartala.
On April 25, Saha said the police and the administration were taking immediate action to identify and deport Pakistanis, as per decisions taken at a meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 26 lives.
A crackdown on illegal immigration by Bangladeshi citizens and Rohingya has been underway in Tripura, especially since the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government’s fall in the neighbouring country last year.
As per a police report, 816 Bangladeshis, 79 Rohingya people and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025, with 483 of them caught after August 5, 2024, when an uprising led to the Hasina government ‘s fall.
