Northeast’s first robotic surgery facility unveiled in Assam

GUWAHATI

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday (April 13, 2025) inaugurated the first robotic surgery facility of the northeast at the State Cancer Institute of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

He said the robotic surgery unit, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for better cancer care in the region, struck the right note for the Bohag or Rongali Bihu celebrations.

“Assam is beginning Bohag celebrations by dedicating North East India’s first ever onco-robotic surgery facility at the Guwahati Medical College. Our government hospitals will now offer low-cost, highly precise and least invasive oncological surgical procedures through MADE IN INDIA machinery,” he posted on X after dedicating the facility to the people.

He said similar facilities were coming up at the medical colleges in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh and southern Assam’s Silchar.

Health officials said the robotic surgery facility was set up for ₹14.99 crore under the Centre’s National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Stroke. The facility offers enhanced precision, superior control and 3D visualisation, enabling better outcomes in cancer care.

The Chief Minister said the State government is in the process of starting nursing colleges across all cancer hospitals to ensure adequate manpower to handle high-end medical technology.
