Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’ On-Screen Drama Was Real

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling’s on-screen tension in The Notebook is so palpable, that it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to learn things between them were just as passion-fueled behind the scenes as well.

Yet for Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the fiery angst between them was a whole lot more tumultuous than their on-screen counterparts. “We brought out the worst in each other,” Gosling admitted in an interview with GQ.

What went on behind the scenes of The Notebook? And how were McAdams and Gosling able to resolve their differences to such a degree that they began dating for years afterward?

The Actors on The Nicholas Sparks Film Initially Couldn’t Stand Each Other

Who would’ve known a whole “enemies to lovers” dynamic was shaking up behind the scenes of The Notebook? Just when we thought Allie and Noah were the passionate ones, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling proved to have caused just as many sparks to fly off-screen as well. Yet before the actors could acknowledge their true feelings for each other, they veiled their emotions with fiery revulsion instead.

The passion-fueled disdain Gosling and McAdams reserved for one another was so intense, that it led to a whole lot of yelling and screaming behind the scenes. In fact, it was so bad between the celebs that the Barbie actor even asked the director of the film if they could replace McAdams with another actress.

“They were really not getting along one day on set,” recalled director Nick Cassavetes in an interview with VH1. “Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here.’ And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’ Relationship Was More Romantic Than Allie and Noah’s

The leading actors were constantly butting heads behind the scenes of the Nicholas Sparks film. Yet, as time went on, the things McAdams and Gosling initially couldn’t stand about each other eventually turned into the very traits they admired in one another most.

It wasn’t long before their on-screen feelings rubbed off-screen as well. In fact, it was while filming their iconic “kissing in the rain” scene, that Gosling and McAdams were finally able to uncover their true feelings that had been bubbling to the surface all that time. “They weren’t together before that kiss,” said Cassavetes. “But they were together after that kiss, so maybe that was one of the deciding moments.”

After shooting the swoon-worthy scene, the romantic leads took their relationship to the next level by becoming an official couple. The pair dated for two years, before ultimately calling it quits. (We’re still recovering.) But despite the abrupt way their relationship ended, Gosling continues to praise his past love to this day.

“The Notebook introduced me to one of the great loves of my life,” Gosling told GQ about his relationship with McAdams. “But people do Rachel and me a disservice by assuming we were anything like the people in that movie,” he continued. “Rachel and my love story is a hell of a lot more romantic than that.”

Why did The Notebook Stars Break Up?

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were so drawn to each other, that it seems hard to believe they’d ever part ways. Yet, unfortunately for the couple, the “showbiz” aspect of their courtship got in the way of being able to maintain a sustainable romance. “When both people are in show business, it’s too much show business,” he told GQ at the time. “It takes all of the light, so nothing else can grow.”

While the two will always cherish their time together, both have seemingly moved on to new relationships. Gosling is married to actress Eva Mendes, while McAdams has been with her boyfriend Jamie Lindin since 2016.
