Despite recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, Apple’s plan to grow its manufacturing in India remains steady. Government sources say the tech giant is not changing its decision and will continue expanding in the country.
India has become an important place for smartphone manufacturing, and Apple’s growing presence is part of that trend. The company has already started making iPhones in India and is expected to do even more in the future.
While speaking in Doha after a business meeting, Trump said he asked Apple CEO Tim Cook not to expand too much in India.
“I said to him, Tim you’re my friend, you’re coming in with $500 billion but building all over India, I don’t want you to build all over India,” he said.
He added that India has high tariffs, which make it hard for U.S. companies to sell products there.
“You couldn’t even do business in India because the tariff is so high. We’re not even the top 30 in India, to the lowest. They’ve said there won’t be any tariffs now,” Trump said.
Despite Trump’s concerns, Indian government officials say Apple’s production plans are on a growth path and are not being stopped or slowed down. The country continues to welcome global companies that help grow the local economy.
