Bengal doctor arrested for taking bribe of ₹10 lakh


The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior doctor who was working as assessor with National Medical Commission (NMC) immediately after receiving a bribe of ₹10 lakh for issuing favourable inspection report of a private medical college.

A press statement by the CBI also added that an additional cash amount ₹44.6 lakh (approx) was also recovered during searches at the premises of the doctor and other private persons. The arrested doctor has been identified as Tapan Kumar Jana who is engaged in the Anatomy department of Murshidabad Medical College & Hospital, Berhampore.

“Searches were conducted by CBI at residential and official premises of the accused public servant and other private persons at several locations in Kolkata, Bardhaman and Belgaum which led to the recovery of additional cash of ₹44.60 Lakh and including incriminating documents and articles. Total amount of cash recovered during the operation is ₹54.60 Lakh,” the agency said in the release.
