External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told a parliamentary consultative committee that Pakistan was informed within half an hour after India launched Operation Sindoor, a military operation aimed at terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was carried out during the night of May 7, according to sources quoted by India Today TV.
“Within half an hour of Operation Sindoor commencing, Pakistan had been informed that only terrorist hideouts were being targeted,” Jaishankar told committee members, as per sources.
A ceasefire was soon established after direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan, initiated by Islamabad, he added.
The committee meeting, chaired by Jaishankar, was held to discuss the cross-border terror threats from Pakistan and the execution of Operation Sindoor. It was attended by Members of Parliament, including KC Venugopal, Manish Tewari, Mukul Wasnik, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Aparajita Sarangi, and Gurjeet Singh Aujla.
Sources present said Jaishankar assured the MPs that India acted with “precision,” focusing only on terrorist infrastructure and taking steps to prevent further military tension.
When asked about foreign interference, especially from the United States, Jaishankar shared that India had a clear stance when the US Secretary of State warned about a possible large-scale retaliation from Pakistan.
He recalled India’s message in ten words: “They fire, we fire. They stop, we stop.”
And when the US raised concerns about Pakistan possibly escalating, India’s response was direct: “If Pakistan escalates, we are ready to respond in kind.”
This explanation from Jaishankar comes after a political row, where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of committing a “crime” by alerting Pakistan in advance.
“Informing Pakistan at the start of our attack was a crime,” Gandhi had alleged. Jaishankar’s comments now aim to set the record straight, saying the move was made to ensure clarity and control escalation during a high-stakes operation.
