A 50-member rapid response team of the Kerala Forest department led by Chief Veterinary Surgeon Arun Zachariah has been deployed to capture the man-eater tiger spotted at Kalikavu in Malappuram district on Thursday.

Chief Conservator of Forests T. Uma told reporters on Friday that though 50 camera traps were set up to locate the tiger on Thursday night, there has been no success so far. However, the paw prints of the tiger were found.

She said that two trained Kumki elephants have been brought from Muthanga in Wayanad to help with the mission. A drone squad has also been deployed. The RRT is planning to conduct the search operations in three teams of 20, and a veterinarian in each of them. They plan to capture the tiger using tranquiliser shots.

The tiger had mauled to death Gafoor Ali (44) at a rubber plantation in Adakkakudu on Thursday morning.

The local residents later protested citing repeated wildlife threats in the area, demanding that the tiger be killed.
